You'll never blow bubbles Delilah, so goodnight Irene
« on: December 09, 2012, 07:09:32 PM »
Hearing the Stokies murdering "Delilah" yesterday got me thinking.

Have Villa ever had a "song" ?

I'm not talking about chants, singing totally/slightly different lyrics to famous tunes etc, I mean an actual song with no changes to lyrical content

Ah. Just read your post a little more carefully before I posted 'Dwight Yorke' in addition to the above.

Aren't the lyrics changed?

There is one my grandfather used to sing called (I believe) An Old Jersey of Claret and Blue and also one about Summer Lane but I think the latter had it's original lyrics changed to fit a Villa theme.

I think that's the one Eric Houghton used to sing. I also think Percy wrote about it for us.

I think that Peter Morris mentioned in his wonderful book that at one of the FA Cup finals at Crystal Palace the Villa fans entertained themselves by singing Hello Dolly.  If my memory is correct, this was from a popular musical of the era.

Not sure if this was a one off or not, though.

The only traditional song I know of with no wording alterations years ago was.

its a long way to Tipperary.  But the song was hi-jacked and changed to wembley

Stoke fans have changed the words to Delilah - only slightly, but they've changed them.

Does We'll Meet Again count?

Villa used to sing 'Long Way To Tipperary' and 'Dirty Old Town'? Never heard of that before.

Was 'We Will Rock You' not an anthem for a while or did I imagine that?

It was the running out music wasn't it?
