Applauding a goal from the opposition
« on: November 15, 2012, 12:16:27 PM »
Following Ibrahimovic's great goal last night my lad noticed England fans applauding. He asked me if i'd ever applauded a goal at Villa Park by an opposition player. The only one I can think of was Scholes' volley from a corner at the North Stand. Anyone else? And did you get a reaction from those sat/stood near?

Pires and A Cole scored great goals at VP for Arsenal that were warmly applauded iirc.

I applauded a goal by Trevor Brooking for West Ham in 1978.

I've done it a few times, yes. If you appreciate a game you have to applaud its finest moments, even if it costs you personally.
It's at the very heart of sportsmanship in my opinion.

If a player does something truly extraordinary then you're privileged to witness it. So you suck it up, applaud him and then, if you get the opportunity, throw a bottle at him.

I agree with your sentiments but would it apply if (now obviously this is totally hypothetical of course) a Blues player cracked in a carbon copy goal of Ibrahimovic's at the Holte End?

That Arsenal display in that first 45 minutes was probably the finest premierleague display i've witnessed first hand. I honmestly thought we were going to finish up losing 7 or 8-0 and came out of the ground feeling pleased we'd managed to lose 3-1. Weird.

Matt Jansen's superb long range effort for Crystal Palace against us. We were 3-0 up at the time but it deserved applause whatever the score.

The Gerrard free-kick was absolute class in 2007, but after the cheating ****** had dived to get the free-kick in the first place I doubt anyone clapped

i have applauded a few, the scholes and rodallega volleys come to mind. there is nothing wrong with appreciating some brilliance from an opposition player, it shows you actually love football as well as the villa.
i wouldnt though applaud any goals from the olbeyun, blose or wolves no matter what!

It wasn't a spectacular goal but I remember Helsingborgs' equaliser being applauded. Not by me, I was too pissed off. Also I was at the match when Scholes scored the volley. I didn't applaud and didn't feel like doing so. I think I might have mentioned my opinion of his club in the post match thread last weekend.
