Goals since football began in 92
« on: September 17, 2012, 10:17:07 PM »
Tonight, according to the BBC text, Newcastle scored their 1000th PL goal to join Man Utd (1551), Arsenal (1353), Chelsea (1290), Liverpool (1239) & Spurs (1078) over this threshold.

It got me checking and I think there is a remote possibility we could join them this season if we have a good one. I have worked out we are on approx 937 by counting up all our prem scorers but this does not include OG totals. Does anyone know the full total? Anyone want to predict when we will do it?

BTW, the official premier league site is useless as they don't have all the correct stats prior to 2000 and all of the above mentioned teams are about 150-200 down on the totals listed by Opta.

977 according to this: http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/premier-league/all-time-table/pl-years

Which is indicative of where we have struggled down the years considering we have had two full seasons more in the PL than Newcastle!!

I make 973 before the season started. Shows how few we've scored over the years if Newcastle got there before us despite 2 seasons less in the PL.

Even TSM's team could get 27 goals, so hopefully we will get it before christmas.

I did think about that and we do seem to have more of a recent tradition of being low goal scorers anyway. But mainly they had one person get 148 goals for them, our highest was 60.

But that other link by Irish shows how scary Manures stats have been over the last 20 odd years compared to everyone else.

Weren't Newcastle only down for one season?

At least Everton too have not hit the 1,000 mark.

Who is ahead between us and Everton? Proof that Spurs and Newcastle have been sexier than us for 20 years (at least) unfortunately.

Newcastle were lucky enough to have Alan Shearer, and keep hold of him as long as they did.  I'd hazard a guess that our top Premier League scorer is Dwight Yorke, with probably a 100 fewer goals than Shearer.

It's 37, I was thinking 27 was woefully low even by last year's standards so I checked. Still crap of course.
Even during the Little era we didn't exactly bang them in, a lot of our success was built on solid defence. The only times I can really recall us being free scoring in the PL era is 92/93 and 07/08.

How many goals have Spurs and Newcastle conceded though?

Actually checked 92/93 & only 57 goals in 42 matches which is hardly prolific.

We are still 1 pt ahead of Spurs after this weekend. Wonder how long that will last.
