Each club has to submit a squad containing no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the "Home Grown Player" (HGP) criteria.

So in effect, it's there so at least one 'Home Grown Player' will be in the squad. What a bizarre rule.

Why has Stan  got no 20? I thought 19 was a special number to him.

He hasn't, he's just the 20th name on the list, alphabetically.

Please don't shoot me down for being insensitive, I'm not and I love Stan as much as the next man, but if there's absolutely no chance of him playing this year (which seems to be the case) then shouldn't we have retired the 19 shirt for this season and included someone like Carruthers or Johnson?

Carruthers and Johnson are under 21 (as of Jan 2012) therefore it doesn't matter he can still play!

No not entirely true. It basically means if you want a squad filled with none home grown players your maximum squad size (of over 21 year old players) is 17 for every player you included in your 25 man squad who is a HGP is a bonus player up to 25 players maximum.

In theory however you could have a full match day squad of NONE HGP's because the first 17 players would be your squad players and the 18th player would just have to be under 21 (not necessarily home grown).

I'm not entirely sure what the home grown player rule is meant to achieve.  It's so unbelievably weak as a rule I can't see how it changes the behaviour of any team and as has been pointed out it doesn't stop a club from selecting a matchday squad made up entirely of non-home grown players.

Does anyone remember why it came about?
