I would rather he had retired from Villa to concentrate on playing for his country.

Did you watch any of our games last season?  I don't know the statistics but given the paucity of goals scored I'm certain he saved us enough points that had a lesser keeper been in the sticks we'd be looking forward to Burnley away on Saturday.
Yes thanks I did watch all of our home games at VP and about half of our away in various places. Yes he does stop some shots but so does every other keeper in the PL. His lack of domination in the area and fixed to goal line position are one of the major reason for our defence being so poor. He is OK but no better than Brad and with future in mind we should pick Brad as number 1.

I'm glad he's retired from international football now he can focus all of his attention on retiring from Villa.

Yes, because he was absolutely dreadful last season wasn't he?

Wouldn't say he was dreadful, but he was quite clearly well into the down slope of his career before he came to Villa....and whoever agreed to give him a five year contract should be locked up!

Watching through that video, I counted 17 saves that I wouldn't expect any keeper to make. I think most Premier League keepers should be counted on to make 17 great saves over the course of a season without being deified.

Is there a video anywhere of how many set piece goals we conceded?

Not sure how much longer he'll be number one here but a good call at least.

Found it strange this morning on BBC news when they were doing the headlines and he was described as "former Man. City goalkeeper Shay Given." Now even ignoring his present employees, his most prominent spell was with Newcastle and he was only at City for 1 months I think.

Undoubtedly he made mistakes but most of the goals conceded I seem to remember were from rank bad marking in the main.

Fancy giving a decent contract to a world-class player.

He's certainly not a bad keeper at all and world-class is such a subjective term but I can't see how it could be stretched to ever describe Given.

That save at the filthy stripey's was outrageous. You have to remember that he played behind the Captain twins with cuckoo and cacka at full back. He's got his faults but what keeper doesn't? He's still a top keeper and he'll prove his worth this season again.

That's the thing about Given. He's had nearly a two-decade career of playing behind nothing but awful defenders across three different clubs.

Awful defenders who miraculously become competent as soon as Given moves on.

I'll put my money on the Captain twins and cuckoo and cacka at full back being the same with Buffon behind them. Not saying there isn't any truth in what you said there Dave but it couldn't have helped. I guess we'll find put this year.

Expecting James Collins to look a lot beter this season then?

Three of the four of them were perfectly good in front of Friedel in 2009/10.

You would need a building the size of the Pentagon to document all of the individual errors made by those players. Like I said I'm not saying Given had nothing to do with our defensive issues, but it appears you are putting more stock in the goalkeeper being the root of the evil rather than the players that this manager has quickly identfied as being the problem. Frankly, and this might just be my opinion, but Warnock, Collins and Dunne collectively have been nothing short of a disaster for the best part of two seasons and Hutton even worse for the entirety of one.
