I hope he makes a full recovery, and all being well, he will. Meningitis can be life threatening and/or life altering.
One of my pet dislikes is what I consider ill-founded criticism of the NHS*. A young woman I know had meningitis as a teenager. The family line was that she was making a recovery. She did, she survived. She had both legs amputated. At the time I thought it was misleading but now I don't, and also, if you saw her now, she's a great example of what the medical profession can do. She had to recalibrate her plans, she's now married, complete with a couple of children and seems [as much as it's possible to judge someone's happiness from a distance] to live a life like most people - ups and downs.
* That doesn't mean I think it shouldn't be criticised if warranted.

Hope he will make a full recovery. I actually sat next to him when he was a kid and on our books, it was at a european match at villa park during September 1998. I was going through intensive radiotherapy at the time (thanks to 2 lovely brain tumours I had, which are all gone, thanks to the NHS) He talked about his uncle Dean. When he started playing in the premier league the memory of this and me putting 2 and 2 together who he was came

My understanding is that the bacterial version is the deadly one but is treatable with drugs, the viral one is less life threatening but is like most viral infections not treatable with antibiotics etc so its a watch and wait scenario
It amazes me how in the modern game as footballer seemingly get the best medical care and are getting fitter and fitter atheletes more and more of them are being diagnosed with such horrible illnesses / diseases
best of luck son hope you make a full recovery (and sign for the villa )

I've had meningitis 3 times. As a 2 year old I had the bacterial form (pneumococcus) and was very poorly. I lost the hearing in my left ear.
At 4 I had viral and was ill but not as bad.
At 33 (just a few of years ago) I contracted the pneumococcus variant again. Some doctors told me that shouldnt happen as I would have built up immunity as a 2 year old so they did a load of tests and put it down to a freak occurence. The scary thing about the recent bout was that the after effects (loss of hearing, legs, brain damage etc) can often only occur a few days later. So I was in hospital praying nothing would happen. Fortunately I made a full recovery. Lets hope Sturridge also comes through unscathed.
Just to add, the NHS were incredible throughout.

Shocking news and I hope he makes a full recovery. A friend of my sister's had twins and one of them contracted meningitis. He survived, but it's a horrible thing to go through!

He'll be fine in a fortnight.
So we won't need a round of applause in the 23rd minute of every game next season.

As ever, some very touching and well considered responses, lovely to read. I hope he makes a full recovery and also that he starts to make something more meaningful out of the undoubted talent he has. I have no doubt he is earning a lot of money at Chelsea, but he really does run the risk I think of doing a Shaun Wright-Phillips
