Update on Stan

Bulgaria's Petrov Leaves Hospital, Leukemia Battle Goes on

Aston Villa captain, Bulgarian Stilyan Petrov, who was shockingly diagnosed with acute leukemia in March, has been released from a London hospital, but his battle against the horrible disease is far from over.

"Only the professor in charge of Stiliyan's treatment knows how exactly the treatment will continue. The only thing I can tell you is that the treatment will definitely continue," Petrov's father told Bulgarian reporters.

Numerous football players, officials and fans across Bulgaria and Europe have shown their support for the 32-year-old Bulgarian international, who was diagnosed with acute leukemia at the end of March.

The Bulgarian national team doctor said he believed the illness was induced by exposure to the radiation of Chernobyl and a failure at the time by the country's Communist leadership to inform citizens of the danger.

When Chernobyl's Reactor No. 4 exploded, Stiliyan was a boy of 6 in Bulgaria, more than 600 miles to the south.

Petrov has been playing for Villa since 2006, after seven seasons in Celtic; before that he played for CSKA Sofia and PFC Montana. He has 105 appearances and 8 goals for the Bulgarian national football team.

The mention of Chernobyl as the root cause of Stan's illness is something that is new to me.

there has been alot of theories about the causes of leukaemia, radiation, microwaves, benzynes in petrol and cigarettes, telecommunications signals and loads more.
nothing has been proved conclusive.
stay strong stan and keep fighting!

As the incident proves, the world we live in is very small.

But you wouldn't want to walk it.

Sounds like a load of made up bollocks from a reporter again.

The fallout from Chernobyl fell north of the reactor which is why it was first picked up in Sweden when the Soviets tried to keep it quiet.  Bulgaria was way down the list of affected countries.

Not made up by a reporter.

Regardless of how he contracted it, lets just hope that the treatment is working.

Watching the match last night Stan's name came up and we were wondering how he was doing.

Pretty neutral sort of report - as ever thinking of you Stan my Man!

Hope he gets a squad number for the forthcoming season...

The explosion at the power station and subsequent fires inside the remains of the reactor resulted in the development and dispersal of a radioactive cloud which drifted not only over Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, but also over the European part of Turkey, Greece, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Poland, Estonia, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, France, and Corsica.[6]), Canada[7] and the United Kingdom (UK).[8][9] In fact, the initial evidence in other countries that a major exhaust of radioactive material had occurred came not from Soviet sources, but from Sweden, where on 27 April workers at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant (approximately 1100 km from the Chernobyl site) were found to have radioactive particles on their clothing.
