A role for Laursen ?
« on: May 22, 2012, 11:55:46 AM »
I see that Martin Laursen has "ruled himself out" as Manager.

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11677/7770705/Laursen-Too-soon-for-Villa

However, given Villa's defensive frailties last season (especially at set pieces), how about using Martin in some kind of "Defensive Co-Ordinator" role at the club.

The only time that I can remember this being tried in the past was Lawrenson at Newcastle.

Would it work at Villa ?

I'd make a role for him. Defensive viking overlord.

Ole is rumoured to be bringing 2 coaches with him and we know Randy will want K-Mac and Sid kept on in some capacity, so is there really any room for another?

One of the coaches is a goalie coach. So yes.
Although I reckon Laursen will be learning his trade elsewhere for a year or two yet before there's any chance of coming here.

It would be nice to have him onboard though. He's exactly the sort of character we need and one "gets" the club.

Look at the club mentioned above.  Newcastle.  They go in for sentimental nonsense like this there.  If we appoint OGS he needs to bring his own men in, not have someone foisted on him to further appease the fans.

Agreed, if we appoint OGS (or anyone else for that matter) to do the job and sort the football side out then he brings in only who he wants.

If that means Kmac goes then so be it.

Otherwise we might aswell appoint Bruce or McCarthy.

100% agree with this and including Sid and Mac if that is the case

Exactly, hopefully Laursen somewhere down the line can have a role at Villa. However if we appoint Solskjaer or Lambert they need to be able to bring their own men in. If they see a role for the likes of Kmac and Sid then great, but we can't be hindered by sentimentality. I don't want them to go, but we can't keep them just because they're club men.

Let him get some experience coaching/managing but keep an eye on him, he could be one for the future. Meanwhile, he could do a bit of scouting for us in his neck of the woods.

I know this is heresy to even raise, but Sid has been on the bench for the last two seasons, and one imagines has a big roll in coaching.

Hmmm.

I don't think keeping K-Mac and Sid is a sentimental decision as both would provide some continuity to our emerging youth players and have already proven themselves to be good coaches.

Laursen might be, though.

McLeish was a good defender. Wonder what he's doing now?

McLeish won European honours, just like John Terry....
