1986/87 League Cup V Derby
« on: May 18, 2012, 11:24:04 PM »
Hi All

Spotted a match i've not seen before, so thought you'd appreciate it.

Taken from our vintage year of 1986/87 at Derby County - runs for 15mins too, which is a rare thing to see of this season.

Enjoy!

Nick

That was my first season as a ST holder and I was still quite young at the time. It has just struck me that there was a lot of quality players in that Villa side, albeit many of them were young at the time. What, aother than the manager and results, were the reasons they went down?

I went to the replay at VP which we won 2-1, watched by a massive 19K (seriously, that was bigger than our average then).

Is this the one where Derby stop because somebody though the ref had blown up, Daley carried on and scored?

Bob, yeah that's the one.

Simon Stainrod really was a waste of time wasn't he !

We won 3 times after Hodge was sold, was that the reason ?!?! I can't remember that much of this season, so i'm unsure

Apart from a six game spell when McNeill took over the whole season was a disaster. Two wins from twenty one games (exactly half the season) after boxing day. Our two main strikers Thompson and Stainrod getting six goals each in the whole season. The previous season we were in trouble and brought in Hunt and Blair on deadline day. That season on deadline day there was talk of buying Speedie but we bought a nineteen year old Everton reserve striker to save us. He didn't score in his first eight games and we were as good as down by Easter.

I remember us looking at getting Speedie, but I guess you can't blame him from joining Liverpool. We were also sniffing around Peter Davenport, though i'm not 100% if that was this season or the one previous.

Speedie chose to stay at Chelsea until the end of the season and then joined Coventry. I think it was 88-89 when Davenport chose Boro over us. We stayed up and they went down!

I was never mad on Stainrod, though he did jon us at a time when we were shit. My memory is that his goals played a very large part in us avoiding the drop in 1985-6 though.

Great goal from TD, what was the ref thinking with that collar?

Great spot.
We had some good young players but were a crap team, also with a crap kit!
Billy McBingo was a crap manager, and the Simon "thespian touches" Stainrod summary from Martin Tyler sort of summed him up really.
Great goal from Daley, Birchy had his work cut out in that midfield with the aeging Steve Hunt in it, and as for that tosser Hodge.......
