I think Whelan knowingly goes out of his way to scupper deals by making them public. Liverpool as we were last year have been compromised by Whelan opening his fucking gobto the press. I imagine if we speak to Martinez he'll be spouting again and that we're not big enough etc etc for the "best young manager in Europe" (yes apparently he said that!).

thanks Monty,
so as i read it, if Liverpool do not go ahead with Martinez, we might well be in the frame with a big chance.

i know we both favour Martinez, but how do you feel about Villa maybe being 2nd best to liverpool, sort of a consolation prize ?

Why are we second best? How do you know how he views the two opportunities? They are talking to him and he is getting an understanding of how that job will and the expectations that go with it. Maybe Liverpool will be turned down by Martinez for us? Would that make them second best to us?

I'm not sure that's the case. As Toronto has been saying, Whelan's gobbed off to the press about this. There's a feeling that, at Liverpool, Martinez would have less authority with less job security - a toxic mix, essentially carrying the can for someone else's mistakes. At Villa he would not only get more authority over the football side of things, but also with more forgiveness and leeway* should things go askew at times. There's also the expectation levels for two teams who, even though they are better than us, are not actually that far apart: Dalglish got fired for 8th, a trophy and a cup final; McLeish would have had his doubters crowing at the achievement had he been able to manage that. If I'm a young, career-conscious manager, I know which one looks a bit more sensible

*leeway? leigh-way? Never known how to spell that.

According to The Mail on Saturday the club spoke to the agents of Roberto Martinez on Thursday.

But who knows, not me for sure.
