Shay Given admits Villa have underachieved

SHAY Given has delivered a “We got ourselves into this mess, now let’s get ourselves out if it” relegation rallying call ahead of tomorrow’s survival six-pointer.

Villa host fellow strugglers Bolton at Villa Park desperately needing a victory to ease fears of the drop following Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Sunderland.

And the club’s elder statesman believes they only have themselves to blame for their precarious Premier League position with four games to go.

“As long as we get over the line,” said Given. “We don’t want to stumble the wrong side of the line because we know we are not safe yet.

“We are five points clear, but any results can happen at the bottom.

“The thing for Aston Villa is we can’t rely on other people, we have to do the job ourselves.

“Ideally we want to win but it is easy enough saying we want to win.

“We have to go out on the pitch and do the business.”

Given admits under-achieving Villa deserve to be 15th in the league, five points above the bottom three because the table does not lie.

“We don’t want to be where we are at,” he said.

“The table never lies and we are where we are because we deserve to be there.

“We don’t deserve to be any higher as we haven’t picked the points up.”

Given took scant consolation from the clean sheet against Sunderland, adding: “You take positives, but you would rather win 6-5.”

Fair play to him. A bit of straight talking for a change.

Actions speak louder than words, now do it on the pitch.

Glad that the players recognise it at least.

They may do, but Sir Alex 2 doesn't.
He's never once alluded to underachieving, just snowballed us with a litany of excuses.

Maybe the players will do it themselves now? Remember the West Brom at home under Houllier? A player's revolt of sorts resulted in us getting a much needed three points. Maybe this is significant and indicates the players have met and want to play for their pride? McLeish hasn't said a whole lot lately....

Well it seems all the players are 100% behind the manager according to the reports from VP, and there have been no reports to say otherwise from elsewhere. I'm not sure why, if true, as most of the senior players have known they have been for the chop since the beginning of the season.

I'd argue that we haven't under achieved. We are exactly where I expected us to be after last summers apointment.

Bloody hell he's strung out a few cliches there, all to state the very obvious.

Come on! The weekly stories we were subjected to last year on pravda were an awful lot more clichéd.
