I assumed he was pre-empting Warnock's inevitable sending off.

For the time being, for me, it's got to be a 4-3-2-1

Given
LichajCuellarCollinsBaker
HerdGardner
AlbrightonIrelandNzogbia
Gabby

With a bench of:

Guzan, Hutton, Warnock, Clark, Johnson, Bannan, Weimann

The key to the formation though is to ensure that Albrighton and Nzogbia spend more time in their half than ours.

What i would like to see:

                            Given
Lihaj         Collins         Cuellar              Baker

                             Herd
          Ireland                     N'Zogbia

                          Weinmann
                             Gabby

I would prefer it if we used all eleven of the players allowed.

He clearly picked heskey but didn't actually give him a spot on the pitch, to display his value to the side... :P

Formations are just numbers, important thing is the manager's desire to win, rather than play not to lose.

2-2-6 is the way to go.

4-2-3-1 for me. And I'd go with :

Given
Lichaj - Collins - Baker - Warnock
           Herd - Gardner
Albrighton (Bannan) - Ireland - Agbonlahor
                Weimann

I think we're capable of playing a number of formations. But, only if we play players in proper positions. At the moment, I'd probably go with. (all being fully fit)

Given

Hutton (RB)
Collins (CB)
Dunne (CB)
Warnock (LB)

Herd (MC)
Petrov (MC)

Albrighton (RW)
Ireland (AMC)
N'Zogbia (LW)

Bent (FWD)

But, with the squad the way it is at the moment. Then, this is what I'd go with.... (especially if Clark is fit for Sunday)

Given

Hutton
Collins
Clark
Baker

Herd
Gardner

Agbonlahor
Ireland
N'Zogbia

Weimann

It took my three pieces of scrap paper at work to write that team down.  Shows how poor we are. This is no way a long term starting eleven. But we need goals to keep us up, obviously!
Even toyed with the idea of going 4-3-3 and sticking Delf upfront but ou midfield would have been pissed over (nothing new there though).

If Herd and Warnock are unfit Gardner and Bannan come in.  Sounds like we should have a few more options soon with the return of Albrighton, Clark, Fonz, Delph, Jenas etc.  Hopefully get Dunne, Bent and Cuellar back soon too.

I'd be suprised if we see Bent again this season, if so it will only be the last game or 2 to get a bit of fitness in the hopes of making the england squad, he's officially out until the end of May though.  Not sure if I want Dunne back or not.  I think the defence has been improving since his injury, Cuellar would be good though.

That midfield would be easier to penetrate than Katie Price.

Also known as the 'wizard sleeve' midfield..........

That looks about as good as anything I have seen so far.  Not sure if Cuellar is going to be back though and it would be a toss up between Gabby and Weimann to start as the striker.  Would agree with your comments about the primary roles of Albrighton and Nzogbia should attacking, but we all know McLeish will be drumming into them the importance of defending first.  I think sitting two midfielders in front of the back four would give us a little bit more protection and would give Ireland a bit more freedom in front of them.  The Evening Mail reported that Delph and Clark could be back for the weekend so that would give us extra options.

Having said all of that, I'm sure McLeish will start Hutton and Warnock at full back if they are fit.  I reckon he will also start Clark in midfield with Herd, even though it is not his natural position and he only passes sideways and backwards when he plays in there.  Just writing this is a stark reminder of the lack of numbers and quality we currently have in the squad.
