Some percent Villa as one of the 6 is Jimmy Hogan.  I had no idea he was involved with the great Hungary side of the 50s.

What is interesting is how various British coaches had the right ideas (pass and move, different formations, closing down, total football, extra training etc. ) decades ago, but their ideas were by and large rejected in England for being a bit too revolutionary.  Few of these coaches achieved any sustained success here.  And note the player power at Fulham back in the 1930s!

There's an excellent book about Jimmy Hogan called Prophet or Traitor, which used to be available from the club shop. It may still be available but it's been a while since I've been in there.

He's a legend in Hungarian football but unfortunately I think he was ahead of the times when at Villa. I remember the book mentioning that other coaches at the club disregarded what he wanted as it was seen as 'weird'.

Might have to give it another read as it's been a while but it's definitely another case of what might have been at Villa.

That's a good article. Shows how little British managers have achieved abroad. El Tel is the only one to win a major European league!

And he was hardly ahead of his times. He stayed resolutely close to home, signing Steve Archibald when Hugo Sánchez was dying to come ... Sánchez stayed at Atlético and then signed for Madrid where he scored about 30 goals a year for the next five years. Thanks, Tel.

Depends what you define as major. The Eredivisie is hardly The Conference.

I bet there are a few more but I only researched Bilbao as they were the first foreign team that came into my head. Can't think why.

I remembered him but wasn't sure if we were counting the Dutch League or the Portuguese League. As Wilfred specifically mentioned El Tel I thought he would have no complaints at me counting the Spanish League.
