Brad Jr offered new contract

Quote
Aston Villa have offered a new contract to United States goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

But Villa boss Alex McLeish is unsure whether the 27-year-old wants to stay as number one Shay Given's understudy.

Guzan has made just six Premier League starts since arriving at Villa Park in August 2008 and may decide to seek first-team football elsewhere.

I'd be surprised if he took it, it's alright Mcleish saying Given is 35 but he's also on a 5 year deal.

I'd be happy if Guzan stayed as back up to Given. He done well earlier this season when Given got injured.

Guzan is fine as number 2 and young Ben Siegrist as number 3 next season.
I hope he signs the contract.

There aren't many clubs out there who have such a good option as reserve keeper.

Hope he signs it, couldn't blame him if he went elsewhere.

Didn't McLeish say recently if Given is fit he starts, so Brad knows however well he plays or poorly Given is playing, he wont play, that must be pretty dispiriting, and doesn't happen in any other position.

He seems to have improved a lot from crosses this season, from the little we've seen of him.

Hope he signs, but wish him all the best if he doesn't.

I'd like to clarify, I'd like him to sign but I can't see the incentive for him. Mcleish has said Given will play if fit and has a deal for another 4 years after this season, so it doesn't give Brad much encouragement.

it will all depend on if anyone else comes in for him and offer him 1st team football and at what level, if he gets a prem or good champs team he will go,
if there is not a lot of options he might sign again for us

i would like him to stay, but he is a very good keeper in my view, and is far to good to not be playing regulary for someone somewhere

I don't really think he mean't it that way, I'm sure if Shay was playing poorly he'd be dropped.

Given IMO is not likely to start every game for a whole season because of injuries. I hope Brad can see this any maybe think "I'll give it another 2 years see how I get on"

I would like him to stay but understand he needs first team football. One idea would be to sign him up long term and loan him out the problem is that Given is not as bullet proof as Big Brad was so we would need a call back clause which would be hard to get another club to go for.

I'd be disappointed if he chose to sign a new contract. He's not going to shift Given from the #1 spot any time soon so it wouldn't say much about his ambitions if he was happy to sit on the bench picking up X amount of thousands a week. At 27 he really should be thinking of playing.

Tricky...  Well basically we have ballsed up again.

With Given's injury history we need a decent reserve keeper (i.e. like Guzan) but I'd completely understand if he wanted out.  So we'll need to sign a new guy and I reckon that'll cost 2m maybe 3m to get the required quality (plus wages etc).
