That run of form was simply incredible wasn't it?! Half the team was exceptionally ordinary and barely top flight standard, but all had their best ever season together. And then there were McGrath, platt, cowans who all fet into the 'team of my lifetime' (i was 2 when we won tge league so cant count that) and my favourite Daley. I think I watched that end of season video about 100 times!!!

89 simply the best of times hence the username - this simply would not happen now the closest you would get this season would be Newcastle, on paper they're a bag of spanners but they seem to play with the same swagger as Taylor's Terrors. I always think about what might have happened if SGT had stayed, would he have made a couple of changes and pushed us on the title or a Cup in 90/91? I just used to love the way Sid would sit in the middle of the park like a copper directing traffic and then bang he'd spot David Platt or Tony Daley running through and put it on a plate for them to score - poetry on a football pitch ;)

I often wonder about the season Venglos had and would it have been any better under Taylor.  Sure, we had finished 2nd but as mentioned above it was a culmination of the best seasons many of those players would ever have.  I wonder whether we'd have kicked on, or drifted back to obscurity.

I was 10/11 for this season and the Villa were my entire life. The pride I felt going to school every day in a Villa top was amazing. McGrath and Cowans on the same pitch. If we're talking about level of genius per pound spent, that team is surely unsurpassed just for the two of them. Add in Platt, Daley and Chrissy Price playing as well as I have any recollection of them ever doing and the side was well worth the second place finish we ended up with. At least.

Nielsen, Ormondroyd, Olney, Mountfield, Gage...... the names roll off the tongue!

Very unhappy with this thread title. The implied total of the six clubs is 100.2%. Should've put "16.6 recurring% Villa". Surely mods should have a better grasp of maths than that? For shame.

That run started with a very flukey home win against a Derby side who played us off the pitch, coming just after 'that' QPR game. It built from there and who could forget the Christmas period when we beat United, Arsenal and Chelsea. When the final whistle went at White Hart Lane I was convinced we would win the league. Spurs, Arsenal, Albion in the cup and of course Everton all from that season are right up there with my favourite away matches. It would have been nice to have been able to get into the Forest ground for the first game of the season though!

I've put a great deal of thought into preparing an appropriate response to your observation and it is this:

Fuck you, Mr Logic.

It should have included the 3-0 Boxing Day demolition of Manchester United though. As the commentator put it on the 89-90 season review video I had, it was "a scoreline of real authority for Aston Villa."

Regarding the Cascarino signing, I heard that Taylor asked Doug to get down to Millwall and sign Teddy Sheringham, but Millwall wanted too much for him so Doug came back with Cascarino, much to the surprise of Sir Graham. Can anyone shed any light on this? Sounds like Doug, but also has the whiff of bullshit about it - I doubt Taylor would have stood for that.

From the great man himself - Sir Graham asked about Sherringham, Millwall wouldn't sell so Doug offered to 'have a word' with Millwall chairman Reg Burr. Sir Graham also said that if he couldn't get Sherringham then Cascarino might be worth thinking about for around £400k. The rest is history.
