John Garbett 1932-2011
« on: December 23, 2011, 04:03:03 AM »
My Father inspired me to visit Villa Park for the first time in 1975.
He had told me tales of matches from the 40's and 50's but the clincher was the fact he played at VP as a schoolboy.
Ironically it was a rugby match but the first time I walked onto the Holte all I thought was "my Dad played here".
We never attended many matches together but the last one against Athletic Bilbao was also one of the best.
Sat in the Trinity surrounded by Bilbao fans we had the time of our lives.

I was on my way to New Cross Hospital when he died last night. My only regret is I never got to tell him that the Villa had fought like Lions at last.

Thanks Dad

Very sorry to hear that Warrior.
One consolation is that your Dad will be at every game from now on.

Many condolences.

All of us whose fathers brought us up to follow the true faith owe them a debt of gratitude. My Dad grew up in Small Heath but still did the right thing.

Thanks to you all for your comments.

My lad has been writing a list of things to remember about Grandad and No. 2 was "He made us all Villa fans but sometimes thought they were rubbish"

Amen to that!

If we can all leave our loved ones with fantastic memories than job is done. One of the things on his list must be "Grandad  saw the Villa win the FA cup" and that to me is priceless!
