Can only be good news signing up good "own grown" young players on longer term contracts

Signed a Contract in January till 2014 as well. Has really impressed and deserves what I assume will be a pay rise with the extra year. Well done Herdy!

Still needs to work a bit on his passing but he's impressed me in a lot of other aspects in his game that suggests he'll stick around a bit longer than Hogg did.

The fact that Herd now appears to be first choice is a measure of how far we have fallen . Herd would be a decent squad player and I think he has been asked to play a role which is difficult enough for an experienced player so it hasn't surprised me that he has looked lost at times, particularly the top sides. He needs some help from an experienced partner but he hasn't got it.

Typical Villa, signing yet another injured player

Very good player, his natural role is defensive CM but he can also play RB imo, he'd be much better than Hutton.

How many right back appearances have you seen to inform that view?
To be fair, his one game at right-back this season did see him win Man Of The Match.

So the argument could certainly be made that he has done better at right-back than Hutton so far in their respective Villa careers.

We can only hope that Herd doesn't burn himself out or become too injury prone. A typical 'roll your sleeves up and get stuck in' player. That is what we have always needed to get Villa Park buzzing. It has been like that as long as I can remember. He is not all about hard tackling either.

A sweeping generalisation but it's typical of an Aussie to break though rather than some of the more recognised and celebrated players from our academy.  He seems to have that aussie tenacity whereas most english sportmen seem scared of failing rather than busting a gut to try and win.

He looked great at right back against Wolves. Hutton has looked very dodgy in most of his.

1703 FOOTBALL: Aston Villa utility player Chris Herd vowed to keep on improving after signing a new four-year contract with the club. The Australia Under-20 international had 18 months remaining of his current deal but has earned his new contract after impressing manager Alex McLeish.

Good news, one of the few chinks of light this season.
