Chris Herd signs new contract.
« on: December 17, 2011, 11:46:00 PM »
Chris Herd has signed a new three and a half year deal.

Great news, has been the big surprise for me this season.

Very good player, his natural role is defensive CM but he can also play RB imo, he'd be much better than Hutton.

Crackin' news, great young prospect. Personally I'm more into him than this Gary Gardner fella.

Good for him.  He has demonstrated that he is competent at this level and in effect is saving us 3m in buying a person for the role.  Another success for our youth academy.

Hopefully soon one of the big names from our yoof will break through.

I have a feeling he may be this season's Hogg. Encouraging start, signs a long-term deal and is sold to a lower-league side within a year. I hope not as I like him and he's a warrior. But at this moment in time he's not good enough to be in a midfield two with Petrov. Clark should be ahead of him.

I don't think anyone is claiming that he will be the next gerrard or whatever but he's doing a reasonable job and I'd guess he is better value for money than hmmm Davis who'd cost us maybe 2m to buy back (as rumoured).  If he's sold on then that is fine too as it'll subsidise the youth squad for another year or so.

Basically I like the fact that he's being given the chance to see how good he can be rather than a Cahill situation or spending Xm on Hutton when Licaj and probably Herd could have done just as well.

My views exactly. He's not good enough to be playing in the starting eleven. He's basically a runner and that's it. Don't see what the hype with him is to be honest.

I seemed to have jumped the gun, he has agreed the new deal and is poised to sign. It's all but done by the sounds of it do still great news.

And I totally disagree with the comparison to Hogg, Herd has much more about him, he can play midfield (a much better footballer) and anywhere across the backline.

Hogg had how many starts for us before being shipped out to Portsmouth on loan? - 3 or 4.
No comparison IMO.

How many right back appearances have you seen to inform that view?

I like him, he's got the right attitude and a lot of self confidence which gives him a chance of going further than more naturally gifted players.
