McLeish on Heskey
« on: November 07, 2011, 10:23:57 AM »
From Auntie:

Quote
1017 BOXING: Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish reveals that he is selecting Emile Heskey, despite the striker suffering from an Achilles problem, because of his importance to the team. "The situation is such that we can't really play him for the full 90 minutes," said McLeish. "But he is effective in the team with the contribution he makes and the appreciation of his team-mates for him and what he gives is there to see."

He needs to play up front, as a target man, it really is as simple as that. He did OK against Norwich, but he is a huge square peg in a very small Bannan  type round hole.

It's amazing the way every manager who ever has him will always love him and see a much better player than anybody else can.

Putting him in midfield is accommodating him.  I'd prefer to see Bannan there to start with as he would give us much more creativity.  If he's carrying an injury put him on the bench and give him 20 mins at the end if we need strength to shore up a midfield or strength to the attack if we're chasing a game.

Man Utd put Wayne Rooney in midfield, we put Emile Heskey.

Seconded

Hopefully this is Ivanhoes last season and by picking him every week we are not giving bannan, ireland, albrighton or Delph the game time they need to prove as to whether they are up to the job.

Short termism at it's very best.

Whilst Ivanhoe might do okay against a mediocre side like Norwich, see how well he does against Spuds

Will never understand why he automatically becomes the manager's golden boy. He doesn't score, create chances or assists, he can't tackle, pass, has no pace. Really i'm struggling to see anything there. Guess you have to be a manager.

I think AM's mandate is to 'get the most out of the squad', so with the wages he's on that means Emile is used if he can be.  He's out of contract in the summer, so I'd expect him to fit in here and there until then.

People have said he had a good game against Norwich, and he did, but he's probably only an asset playing where he is in games we're on top in.  When we're under the gosh and need extra legs tracking back, or someone with some dynamism to drive us through a rough period in game, then he's more hindrance than help.

With Jenas now fit, I hope and expect him to be reduced to a cameo role for the rest of the season.

Maybe he has something on the whole of football, some dodgy pics or some other blackmailable items that keep him in football.

I think that if you were to forget the fact that he's Emile Heskey you'd think he shows a fair bit of promise in the midfield role.
