John Woodward

Can anyone help me settle an argument with a Tesco Bags fan who is still chuntering on about Huttons tackle on Long.
Not content with me telling them that Huttons tackle was harmless compared to Ally Brown ending Alex Cropleys career who remembers John Woodwards career being ruined by a tackle by I think Douggie Fraser? Does anyone have any details?

I can find general information about him, but nothing specific to a career ruining tackle. He played for other clubs after a spell with us.

It was ally brown whose "challenge" effectively ended Alex Cropley's career,
They also injured Ray Graydon who was out for ages, and in both cases, they were never
the same players when they returned to the squad.
I have been "terrorised" by Olbiyun fans this week, much as i dislike liverpool, I would love it
even Downing opens his account for them!

Fraser was one of the dirtiest bastards I've ever seen on a football field, he'd be sent off in his first tackle now.
John Woodward did go on to play at Walsall later but he was never the same after his injury.
I also remember him cutting in two a young debutant for Villa called John Griffiths in a League Cup tie in 1969 at Villa Park, never saw Griffiths again much after that.

He was our replacement for Tony Hateley. Looked pretty good in his first few appearances, then as Oscar says after the injury (of which I have no specific memories) he was nothing much.

Is its correct that you were also present for Archie Hunter's debut ?

He's not sycophantic and annoying is he ?

Last seen 'commentating' on the kids' Fenerbache game with Bananaman eating chips, looking nauseated by the very same Jack.

Cropley's career was ended by Ally Brown - should have been 10 red cards that.

season 66-67
Vila brought John Woodward to replace Hateley.
Woodward was a devil-may-care trier and quickly became a fans’ favourite when he scored two goals against Leeds – one a risk-taking diving header – in his first Villa Park match, but injury stopped him in his tracks the following week (against Sandwell) and he did not play again that season.
There was something about Woodward that was similar to the much later arrival Andy Gray in the way he would throw himself at the ball regardless of danger to himself, but his injury snuffed out that promise too quickly.

Alex Cropley
At Villa, he featured in a memorable win against the great Liverpool side of the period, but he suffered serious injury, a broken leg, yet again on 10 December 1977 and a derby against Albion at Villa Park  which saw Baggies forward Alistair Brown  break Cropley's leg in a tackle that effectively ended his career.

Ally Brown bottled it, saw Alex Cropley coming and went in late.

My favourite Villa player Alex Cropley.

We had a some pretty "handy" teams in the 2nd Division days but they were never the snide likes of Giles, Brown etc...
