Interesting 5 minutes
« on: October 22, 2011, 10:22:38 PM »
I was outside the North Stand on Witton Lane talking with DW before today's game.

In a 5 minute spell Gary Shaw stopped in his car to talk to Dave and Dennis Mortimer came over and spent about 5 minutes talking to us, the sad thing was that nobody recognised Dennis even though loads of Villa fans walked by.

Shaking his hand was a glorious moment for me (not DW's)

It was an interesting 5 minutes

Me and Legion saw Nigel Kennedy before the game.

Shocking that no one recognised Dennis, a sad indictment of the mod£rn game.

I can accept that not everyone will recognise every ex player even the 80-82 side, as an example I don't remember seeing a picture or anything of Gary Williams for probably 20 odd years so may not recognise him if he walked past. But Dennis? And Gary Shaw?

And if Chelsea's third choice left back walked past he'd get mobbed. That's modern football.

The thing was that Dennis was so approachable, he would have been delighted to mix with the fans.

And he was just standing in the road having a chat like any other fan

Shame he didn't get the recognition

I'd have turned into a gushing big girl if i'd been there. I'd have probably said something like "fuck me it's Dennis!" and then shook his hand whilst grinning like the village idiot and jabbering a lot less sense than the idiot would manage.

I did just manage to shake his hand and say "nice to meet you Mr Mortimer" hardly inspiring stuff from me!

He must have thought I was the village idiot!

I met Sir Dennis a few months back, what an absoloute Gentleman, he was at a charity event and with Trevor Brooking, I asked him for his autograph, he said do you want Sir Trevors Aurograph, I replied "has he ever won the European Cup", credit to Brooking he did laugh and so did Dennis.

I was in the  main Trinity reception a couple of season's ago and saw Dennis, recognised him straight away, went over and had a chat. He was with "another" man. I asked Dennis for his autograph and he obliged and than said you want Tony's as well and than handed my programme to the man with him! That was Tony Morely and to my shame I did not recognise him.

Don't really see a lot of these guys in the media.

For example they should be pundits for our games on Sky Sports etc so younger fans could become more aware of them.

Nigel Kennedy was eating his pie at half time in the Trinity yesterday but found plenty of time to chat and pose for photos with people in between bites. He was wearing a particularly garish yellow top though that made him look like a steward.

Sorry fellas but the early-80s is 30 years ago now.  The majority of our support either weren't born when they played for us or don't remember because they were too young.  Couple that with the fact that during the Doug era the period of 1980-1982 didn't exist and therefore never, ever got mentioned and it's hardly surprising very few people recognise the legends.

Plus as has been pointed out, these guys aren't on TV at all and are hardly particularly high profile in other ways.  They do the 'Meet the Legend' stuff in the corporate bits at the ground but 99% of the support have never experienced that.

It is a shame they don't get recognised but it's certainly not surprising.
