Ash improved last season? How, by playing him in a position that did no good for the team. Just sums the bloke up really.

How on earth did Ashley Young improve last season ?

We made him Captain, let him take all the free kicks (even ones in our own half), throw ins, the lot, in a desperate attempt to keep hold of him. He was going through the motions....... we all knew he was off to Man Utd.

He is putting twice the effort in for them than he gave us last season.

As with N'Zogbia, I don't think it's lack of effort.  Last season he was played out of position in a shit side, for a crap manager.  This year he's surrounded by a much higher class of player and is playing in his preferred position for a brilliant manager.

Sometimes, when people talk about Ashley Young, I think they're talking about an entirely different player.

How can anyone accuse him of lack of effort last season? You can accuse him of a few things, but lack of effort is the last thing I'd ever throw at him

Agree 100% with Paulie and zero% with Richie on this one. Ashley Young gave us four years of complete commitment wherever he was asked to play. The fact that he's made such a good start to this season is because he is playing amongst a whole team of very good footballers under a master tactician. Maybe that's the difference, not that he wasn't trying - maybe he was trying too hard. I bear him absolutely no hard feelings (unlike certain others who have jumped ship).

The bloke was cock who for the most part hadn't got a clue. best example being Sunderland at home - one of the most inept displays of management i've seen in the past 10 years.

So yes IMO Houllier was a cock

Well that's complete bollocks. One thing you could never criticise Ashley Young for was his effort. If he hadn't put the effort in, there's no way Ferguson would've signed him.

Try watching the games before you make comments next time.

I was never a fan of Houllier but gave him a chance. It quickly became apparent he was trying to change things too quickly and was making a cock of everything.

The more time that passes, the worse his mistakes look. A side that had Ashley Young, Downing, Carew Friedal, Dunne, Luke Young, Gabby and Darren Bent should not have been fighting relegation in April.

He went out of his way to put his stamp on things, to piss of players like Warnock, Carew and Dunne and nearly took us down for it. Look how good Warnock, Dunne and Collins have been this season. If we manage a ninth position finish this season with a much weaker squad how crap will Houllier look then?

It's called hindsight. A more nuanced view might take into account that he tried to have us playing decent football, that he experienced one of the worst injury crisis in living memory and that several players didn't actually spend the pre-season getting into shape. Some of his ideas were good, but his implementation was poor. But to say that Houllier was crap, or a disaster, is biased and one-sided, to say the least, and there is yet little indication that we are better off without him. (People might like to point to our improved defence, but we conceded 12 goals in the last 10 matches of the Houllier/GMac period, which is not much worse than 4 in 5 matches if you factor in the turgid performances and the quality of the opposition so far this season.)
