Aston Villa Hall of Fame
« on: July 06, 2011, 07:42:28 PM »
Anyone remember this? In 2006, Aston Villa announced the creation of an "Aston Villa Hall of Fame". This was voted for by fans and to this date there has been one induction of 12 in 2006:

Gordon Cowans, Eric Houghton, Brian Little, Dennis Mortimer, Ron Saunders, Peter Withe, Paul McGrath, Peter McParland, Charlie Aitken, William McGregor, George Ramsay and Trevor Ford.

Maybe its time for some more additions?

What about Mellberg?  Laursen?  Graham Taylor?  Ian Taylor?  and Gabby when he's retired?

Actually, after reading the interview with JPA I'm tempted to add him as well!  But there have to be criteria.  OK then,

If one of the criteria is silverware then all of the Rotterdam players should be there, so it can't be only that.  I think that maybe the criteria have to include:

Being a sort of 'spirit of the club', and/or
Showing true and consistent leadership on the field, as well as/or
Playing very, very well (let's not underestimate this one) and/or
Connecting with the fans and showing mutual appreciation (e.g. shirts rather than a Twitter comment) and/or
Devoting a whole career to the greater glory, as it were, and/or
Managing the Villa in a series of seasons, good and less, but still achieving the best possible under the circs.  and/or
Working for the Villa in a number of capacities over years ...

...and that maybe a Hall Of Fame candidate would combine 2 or 3 of the above.  Not sure that I have managed to include every reason.  Perhaps other posters might be able to fill this out a bit.

JPA should definately be in it.
If they're true Villa people, who gave 110% for the club regardless of what league, what position and what we won then they should be up there
The defining players in glorious moments aswell

so who, and under what criteria?  I think that the people who get through need to be the best.  But I refuse to think that there has been nobody since...well, the last person!  Chronologically speaking, that is, and possibly we have missed somebody else who is deserving, as previous posts have shown.  Who else was the question. Why not the people you've listed and the others?  What are your criteria?

We are on the biggest trophy drought in our history. All the players I mentioned are more worthy than any that made their debut since 1996.

We have had some very good players since our last trophy (Laursen) and some quite good players (Taylor) since then but none worthy of a Hall of Fame. Not in the second batch anyway... maybe when the HoF expands to about fifty players plus.

CD - do you think that the Hall Of Fame should be only about players? And can there be entitlement without major team attainment?  If so, surely Taylor and Laursen meet that and I would argue for Sir GT as well.

However, it sounds to me as if you are going for winning silverware, in which case, BFR and the mid 90's boys would be right in there!

Actually no problem with me, I loved Dalian!

So its about winning trophies?
Alan Wright to be included in that

I don't mean anything to Alan by that I used to really like him, but wouldn't say he's a legend!

Strange Hall of Fame that contains no members of the most successful team ever to wear the colours - the double winning, all conquering team of the 1890s.  Also missing the manager in situ when we won the European Cup.  And our greatest ever goalscorer. And our last FA Cup winning captain.  And Mr Witton Lane, the inventor of the bicycle kick...

Actually how about a "Hall of Infamy"  (they've all got it infamy) for the likes of Splodge, DJ Callaghan, Bosko Balaban, Billy McNeill, Graham Turner, Habib Beye,  Steven "mad as a brush" Ireland, Ivo Stas, Stefan Postma's strap-on and Mr Witton Lane inventor of the bicycle kick...

Frank Barson could be in both.
