One Moment in Time

Crushing 5-1 defeat of Birmingham City voted Aston Villa FC ‘Moment in Time’

The legendary 5-1 defeat of Birmingham City in 2008 has won the debate to be crowned the 188SPORT ‘Moment in Time’.

The ‘Moments in Time’ campaign asked Villa fans to post their all time favourite moments from the club’s history. Over 1,700 fans have had their say since the club partner 188SPORT launched the campaign back in February.

The winning moment, posted by Joe Coleman, details the historic win over Birmingham that gave rise to the famous ‘The City is Ours’ slogan. The match saw Ashley Young and John Carew each score two, keeping the local rivals in serious relegation trouble.

Birmingham managed a consolation from Mike Forsell, but a final goal saw Gabby Agbonlahor race through the middle and thunder the ball into the goal for a spectacular finish.

Joe’s post accumulated the most votes from Villa fans and through 188SPORT’s relationship with AVFC, he received match tickets and a signed Villa shirt. In addition, over the course of the campaign, all those who contributed by uploading their favourite moments were entered into weekly competition draws for a range of match tickets to see AVFC in action.

Jeff Baker, Head of Marketing Services at 188SPORT, said: “We are delighted that the ‘Moments in Time’ campaign has sparked some serious debate amongst Villa fans. It has been great to see some passionate Villa supporters showing their enthusiasm and knowledge of their club’s history. We would like to thank everyone who took part and particularly congratulate Joe on the popularity of his posting.”

Congratulations to Joe Coleman, but didn't this one get the most votes?

My brothers mate had an insperational on Villa winning 5-1, they all thought he'd wasted his £5.
He said 5-1 just "came to him" when he picked up the form.
At 5-1 and with, I think, 15 minutes to go there were 5 staunch Villa fans willing for the final whistle  ;D

Beating Small Heath is better than winning the European Cup. How small time are we?

It was good, but not that good.

Putting 5 past the Redscouse when they were at their best and Deano's home debut easily trump that. And that's before you even start talking about Cup semi finals and finals.

I prefer the 4th placed contribution. Yes, it might have been mine but surely that was the pinnacle of our achievement?

Inter Milan (twice) ?

Bilbao?

Atletico Madrid?

Ajax was pretty special too, our first big European night at VP for a while.

I would go with...

1 Winning The Double on the same day (1897)
2 European Cup (1982)
3 Beating second-placed Liverpool 5-0 to secure title on last day of season (1899)

...as my top three.

I will be impressed if Legion can find a Youtube link for numbers 1 and 3!

Surely the only thing that  this tells us is that people who vote on silly internet polls tend to be younger.

Obviously anyone who is 35+ will have voted for 1982, but anyone under the age of 21 isn't going to have a great deal of memorable moments to choose from.
