26th May
« on: May 26, 2011, 03:19:07 PM »
Just realised the date.

29 years, still at least it was a proper champions trophy and we could claim to be the champions of Europe having won our league the previous season and beaten the champions of other leagues in order to win it.

Modern football is rubbish.

And Small Heath are celebrating twenty years since the Leyland DAF trophy, just shows the gulf in class.

I'm trying to remember what I was doing at this time (mid afternoon) that day. I was the only youngster (11) in a crowd of grown-ups and I think I was sat outside a bar in Rotterdam reading a football magazine while they were on the lash. I think there was a kickaround going on in view as well and it was very, very hot. I'm pretty clear on the events from approx half seven to half nine though.

I was at school wondering why the place next to me was empty.

It turned out that the kids dad had taken him to Rotterdam to see the Villa win the European Cup.

Jammy bastard.

I was 18 and would have gone, but had an A level exam that day.

With hindsight, I should have skipped the exam and gone to Rotterdam. A levels can be taken every year.......

I didn't find out till he woke me up on the Monday morning and told me I wasn't going to school, I was going to Rotterdam. Good job I was sufficiently accademically ahead of you to miss a week. I thought I'd made up to you with the Queen ticket a couple of years later (shit, shouldn't have mentioned Queen on here). By the way, cheers, I'm currently working my way through the lager you left in my fridge after the barbeque Sat!

Happily, I was there. Went to the FA Cup Final replay the following day, QPR v Spurs. When we got to Loftus Road to collect tickets we went into the pub next door and it almost went silent when they spotted my Villa shirt but got drinks bought for us and looked after by some 'pwoper geezers' who we happily managed to lose once they'd escorted us to Wembley.

I was there, and I remember every minute, every pint and every emotion.

I've told the kids that when I hit old age I want them to have me shot the day I can't remember Rotterdam. No point living on once that memory goes.

One of my abiding memories is of an incredibly pissed bloke singing 'Put another log on the fire...' over and over again on the return journey on the ferry.

I was only a year old but my grandad was there. first thing I thought if this morning was him and Rotterdam. I'm in Berlin at the moment and have spent all day under a stifling sun in my champions of Europe top. best I can do, and it still feels great!

I remember as soon as the game ended an ad break came on.

It was a guy steaming into a pub shouting we've won. 'Beer at home means Davenports'  :D
