McAllister 'Cuellar still has a future here.'
« on: May 11, 2011, 04:30:20 PM »
birminghammail.net

Hard done by Carlos Cuellar has been reassured he still has a part to play at Villa – despite struggling to break into one of the Premier League’s worst defences.

Cuellar has endured another frustrating season warming the bench with Richard Dunne and James Collins preferred in the centre.

The Spaniard has been restricted to ten league starts and two substitute appearances despite Villa conceding 58 goals – the sixth-worst record in the top flight.

Cuellar has experienced a stop-start career since signing from Rangers for £7.8 million in August 2008 and has just over a year left on his contract.

The 29-year-old defender has been a paragon of patience and despite reported interest from Spanish clubs, recently revealed on Twitter he wants to stay at Villa.

Caretaker boss Gary McAllister described Cuellar as a “model professional” and suggested the former Osasuna player would eventually get another first-team chance.

Dunne and Collins have formed a regular partnership but Villa also have Cuellar and young defenders Ciaran Clark and Nathan Baker challenging for a central role.

“Carlos has been working fantastically well,” said McAllister.

“But the facts are we’ve had a wee run of results.

“People warranted keeping the jersey but it’s very competitive, that’s just the way it is.

“We can’t pick 20 players, but the players that are not in the team have got to continue to put pressure on those that are. That’s what makes a good football club.

“We have five or six centre- halves at the club and the decision is to pick two.''

cuellar is garbage...

his passing is awful, his first touch is a volley, and he has the pace, mobility and turning circle of a tree...

and he's still better than Richard Dunne and James Collins, and didn't have beer fuelled fight embarassing the club during the season. Cuellar isn't as good as some make out, but I'd like to have seen him play a lot more than he has.

A limited player, but would prefer him instead of one of our 'established' centre halves.

I think he's just an old-fashioned centre half, passing and playing the ball out of defence isn't his game. How many stupid goals could have been avoided this season if someone had just got rid of the ball instead of watching in terror as it pings around our penalty area?

I'd have him in place of Dunne and Collins on their form this season, and I hope we can persuade him to stay at the club for longer.

He's far better than the two lumps of shit who've been at centre back.
It's criminal that he's been on the bench when he should have been playing.

MON ruined him. Looked superb at Rangers in Europe but being stuck at right back when he was trying to establish himself seems to have damaged his confidence permanently

He's far from garbage.

Deserved more of a chance this season.

he's still a good CB back greg. MON didn't ruin him at all, and if you look at our defensive record it's better with him at RB.

MON liked playing with CB's in the team, and you could argue it contributed to us being more effective at defending set pieces. It also partly explains why Mellberg also played RB because it just gave us more height in defence and suited MON's philosophy in attacking situations too.

I think McAllister is too scared of Dunne and Collins to drop them.
The amount of c***s we've had upset the applecart this season, Carlos has been a bloody saint in comparison.

All centre half's need to develop a partnership and that comes from playing games regularly. In my view, Cuellar would be good enough to play every game and would improve considerably for it.
Collins and Dunne would not change much, one day good, one day bad.
Besides, 'garbage' is a comment not to be taken seriously.
Lesser players such as Aaron Hughes, Knight and others we got rid of have been described as such, but even they are at least competent and consistent performers, albeit without any further potential. Because they are not as good as the best still does not justify the garbage comment.

I'd have in in the team before Dunne or Collins. He could't be any worse that those two have been all season. It must be very disheartening for him sitting on the bench every week watching their comedy defending.
