??% Villa

Did anybody watch the BBC2 programme that was just on (9pm) - Alan Sugar about football and the business it so seemingly can't run.

Nothing much new to learn, as we all know that player's wages will ruin the game. And that's pretty much what most people on their said.

However, what got me was everyone was blaming everyone else for the financial mess football is in. Richard Scudamore washed his hands of it, saying it's all the clubs responsibility.

The only person who can seemingly save all this is Michel Platini, and his controls being brought in to reject any clubs into the champions league who make a loss.

However, all i can see is the bigger clubs being able to get around this, e.g. having big sponsorship deals to increase turnover.

Apparently any excessive sponsorship deals will not be allowed.  Any suspect deals will be judged based on market value only.  That's the theory anyway.

Yeah, and if you've got more money than everybody else, you'll get a slap on the wrist, a haf-crown fine, and told to carry on as normal.

Nothing to see here....

Players wages ruining the game, says Alan Sugar.

Alan Sugar who indirectly made a fortune from the influx of stupid money into the game himself.

What he said was right though. Someone needs to cap wages, soon. The game is getting more and more ugly. Whelan was right with only 2 players over 20k a week.

The biggest hope is that Platini and Uefa impose a Europe wide salary cap after taxes that players can get, plus a maximum squad size.

Scudamore, though a puss filled scrotum, is right in a way. Clubs are the only ones that can bring this to order. And quite frankly they never will. Why would it ever benefit the leading spenders to reduce their spending to a level that allows competition to be more balanced? The players are going to want what the clubs are willing to pay. And as long as certain clubs are paying stupid wages, then others in their naive attempt to contend (us included) will do the same.

As for Scudamore, he has no interest in getting in the middle of the very problem that's making him a shed load of cash. The Devil needs Man to create him own downfall in order to stay powerful.

The players are the stars of the show. With the money sloshing around from the TV deal and the other revenue streams it's only right that they see most of it. Factor into the equation the global appeal of the top flight -where players are probably as well known now as film stars and musicians- and you can make a case for them getting a similar level of income.

If anything (and as crazy as it sounds) they're possibly under paid compared to some of the mental deals in US sports -for players who have a far lower global profile.

Against all that, it's a shite state of affairs that despite record TV deals, inflated ticket prices and all the rest of it most clubs in the top flight are actually in the red. It would only take Sky to offer slightly less the next time the deal comes up for renewal to have a huge knock on effect. None of the terrestrial channels would be in a position to bridge the gap, so the clubs would have to wear it.

Players who earn more in a week than the average fan does in a year and they disapppoint week on week.
Jus eff off and eff off again
There is better entertainment going on down Glebe Park for nothing any day of week.
Get real. They are soaking up the hard earned income of the working class her and not giving even miniscule returns.
£50k a week equals £2.5m a year..gedouttahere..for feckin what?
They all want Rooney wages..how much is he on? £25m a year?
Normal people have to retire on less than £500k pension savings or they are bankrupt, so I'm told.  Retirement is a dream for 95% of population and they are probably 100% football supporters.
Eff off footballers and retirement plans in The Bahamas.

No results no effing pay!!

I want to see players wages increase even more. The sooner the game goes bust and we start again the better.

Pol Pot, Khymer Claret and a return to year zero.

I agree with the sentiment that the players should get a decent whack for the entertainment they provide, howver none of this should be with the ability of a club to be in the red each season, including loans to owners etc. The clubs will never take the decision, so Uefa should take it out of their hands and impose a cap. So what if it hurts the biggest teams. It would be refreshing europe wide to level the playing field somewhat, football is as boring as formula 1 in tersm of knowing the results on the starting line.

Maybe F1 is the lesson to be learnt.

It nearly went out of business because of the dominance of Ferrari, driven by their bottomless pit of cash.  The difference with F1 though is that it's 'owned' by a corporation so when they saw their investment going down the pan they put rules in place - an expenditure cap being one of them - to make it more competitive.

Football isn't owned by anyone.  FIFA and UEFA are the only organisations in a position to introduce new rules but they don't stand to lose anything with the status quo.  If anything, the implementation of rules the big clubs don't like would cause them more bother.  The Premier League (Scudamore et al) make a fortune out of the current system so why would they change it.  The big clubs do alright out of things so why would they change it.  It's the smaller clubs and the fans that suffer - none of which are in any position to do anything about it.

I'm not sure what the answer is - short of a fundamental shift in public opinion away from football which forces the TV money to dry up.

I thought Dave Whelan had a good idea bring a salary cap in at 20 grand a week that would be better than what they are getting now Alan Sugar said it will all end in tears and you know what he could be right.

The organisations and the people that 'run' football don't even want to introduce little cameras to judge whether a goal has been scored correctly or not.

I won't be holding my breath to hope they take monumental decisions that could restrict the amount clubs spend, thereby taking on the largest and most profitable clubs in the world with all sorts of financial, political and maybe illegal powers behind them.

The game is run by lambs who pander to lions. The fans? Who cares about them?
