Shock! Villa's triumph ignored by the media - again.
« on: April 24, 2011, 02:28:44 PM »
As part of their build up to the Royal Wedding, on Tuesday 5 Live are having a trip back down memory lane to 1981.

The top three sporting highlights of 1981?  The League Championship trophy coming back to Villa Park for the first time since before the First World War, Ian Botham winning the Ashes and Bob Champion winning the National.

Not according to the 5 Live website:

Quote
Gabby adds a sporting flavour with Steve Perryman from Tottenham Hotspur's FA Cup winning team, Scottish footballer John Wark who won the UEFA Cup with Ipswich Town and was player of the season in 1981, and Steve Davis who three decades ago won his first snooker Masters title.

For 30 years now, as far as the media are concerned the footballing stories of that year are Ossie's dream and Ricky's goal, Alan Kennedy's strike to defeat the mighty Real Madrid and Ipswich's fatigue denying them a rightful treble.  Once, just once, wouldn't it be good if our story was given the headline treatment?

Don't worry about it. I wouldn't swap places with Ipswich now.

I love the fact that 30 years later Brazil is still miffed by it. Check the table for May 1981 and see who's top!!

That's right, the media always favour the big clubs rather than Villa.

What baffles and irks me is that points wise, Ipswich came closer to winning the League the season after, and they won 26 games in 81/82 like we did in 80/81, but Liverpool just beat them to it, although the redscouse were never begrudged of their success by the press or indeed anyone.

He's past his sell by date now, the show needs freshening up.

Him and Irani, what a waste of life listening to that shyte.

As for Villa being ignored; they are out to get us you know ;-)

It's true though. Had a bit of a pub quiz thing the other night and one question was "why do some clubs have triangular corner flags and some square?" Answers here please.

Next one was which English clubs have won the European Cup/Champions League. Now this is a pub full of Brits and not one. NOT ONE remembered the Villa! Nottingham Forest were remembered of course.

When I pointed out our win - being known as a rabid Villa fan- no one believed me. We are truly the forgotten club.

Perhaps because we spent twenty-four years pretending we hadn't won it?

I think the corner flag thing is to do with winning the FA cup.

I think that's an urban myth and actually you can have whatever corner flags you like.

Corner flags: you might be right about it being a myth but the answer as given was that only those clubs who have won the F.A. Cup can display a triangular flag/pennant.

Might have been an old "gentlemans agreement" but I will be checking the bloody flags now!
