I loved seeing their tears when we relegated them. Well down the lists of rivals but always game and don't like Brummies. I got nicked there one year because a fella in his 40s started punching a kid in his teens because he was wearing a Villa shirt!

The retarded bully got severely dealt with.

Nasty man.

I remember in the late 90s some 'Villa fans' starting on a Coventry fan and giving him a kicking on the floor by Witton Station. When real Villa fans pointed out the culprits to the solitary Police Officer, he pretended he couldn't see them. I assume he was awaiting back up.

Anyway, I'm quite sad to see them go down. Their fans were fobbed off with the idea that a mega arena would benefit the club at the expense of squad investment.

The stadium is owned by the council. They sold Highfield road for what is now a housing development and wasted the money. A bit like Lerner is doing with some of the assets of Aston Villa.

As for "Villa fans" comment, I don't condone violence at football, but it was part and parcel of being a football fan during the 70s & 80s. I remember vividly going to places like Liverpool, Manchester and the vast majority of towns and cities across England and experiencing aggression with the odd beating, but it made me more resolute in my love for Aston Villa.

Not right but it happened.

I think it was part and parcel of the 70's and 80's if you went looking for it. There were occasions when it was difficult to avoid, but it doesn't mean you had to join in. In all the years I've traveled away with Villa, I've never had so much as a scratch. The example of that Cov fan is unfortunate and I'm sure that there are many examples of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I honestly believe that now, as then, you can't find trouble if you don't want it.

I disagree, I found untold trouble during the 80s as a young man without ever looking for it. But it was part of going to the football, and it I still go now and take my children.

Take off the blinkers. It is what it was. No complaints here.

During the 80s particularly, there were some places where trouble would find you whether you liked it or not. The 70s was similar. Football specials with 60 people on to places like Forest and Bristol, 300 Villa at Leeds; it was a grim time.

A few years when we played them at their place I saw how wound up they were. They were baying for blood in and out of the ground. Villa fans around laughed it off. Outside it was crazy shit and the walk back to the station through the park was nuts. I was with my dad and some geezers were trying to start on us. A friend was battered outside and put in hospital. We passed a pub with a load of them mobbing up, formulating a plan, then breaking up into small group to attack the villa. We missed it but folk at the station were commenting on the trouble. Can't remember the year but it was 1-1. I think Dublin scored for us.

Ever since then I have hated them

Coventry are a nothing club, in a nothing city. They hate us with the same backwards bile you get from noses.

They aren't really a rival but their rabid hatred makes it very funny when they are struggling.

A plague on all your houses.

Can't remember the year

It was every year

Those long escorts back to Coventry station from Highfield Road were always fun. And the experience was usually rounded off with a mob of Blues waiting at New street for our return

You could but it was difficult to travel away in those days to not see the potential for trouble around you as Chico has pointed out.  Even if you chose to go by coach or in a mates car or with a mate in his Dad's car the motorway services at times could also be tricky places at times with coaches from many different clubs parking up in the same place.

Having not been on a football coach for many years do they still ban football coaches at services?

Villa, Albion and Wolves in the top division, Small Heath in the second and Walsall and Coventry in the third would have seen the six West Midlands clubs at their rightful levels. So I was sorry to see the Wolves go down.
