Horrible, cheating, petulant wanker. There were plenty more of his ilk to follow. He was a decent player though.

I still maintain that he's little more than a poor man's Ibrahimovic.

Not that that doesn't make him a very good player though.

I'm not his greatest fan but Cantona was 10 times the player that overrated pile of shit will ever be.

edit. I realise now somebody will provide a link to some wonder goal that always gets dug up where he is concerned but i'll still think he and Inzhagi are the two most overrated players in world football possibly ever.

Both are spectacular players who will score brilliant goals and inspire their team to titles and trophies. Ibrahimovic scores better goals and in greater quantities though.

Yet both do bugger all in European competitions and are fairly average internationally.

I'd be interested to hear what people feel Cantona offered that Ibrahimovic doesn't.

Dave, you speak as if Eric is still playing. Could it be true (aside from that beach football lark he did the other year)?

He also has phenomenally good hearing to detect 'racial abuse' from one man in a packed ground.

He was walking by the touchline after being sent off though. The way he went at Simmons suggests he was verbally abused and was fairly sure who said it! Not to condemn the action - he should have got a few weeks in jail for it, but you sound like you're saying Simmons may have been an innocent bystander.

Of course he wasn't entirely innocent, but if every player who was sworn at by someone in the crowd reacted like Cantona did, we'd need fences back to protect us from them. Yet someone (I don't think ever Cantona said it himself) said he'd been racially abused, and he was excused. he is possibly the only player who could have got away with it to the extent that he did, because the media worshipped him in a way they never have any player before or since.

From the Bruce equaliser and winner in stupid amount of extra time against wednesday to this incident is the reason i hate them with a passion

Every ill of the modern game can be placed firmly at their door and the FA's for costantly bottling it when they have a chance to do something about it

And even today it continues

I hate them and whoever plays them i want to win - "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"

The bloke who he Kung-fu'ed, I'll never forgot what he claimed to have shouted at Cantona.

'It's an early bath for you Eric!'

He probably works for the BBC dubbing swear words out of films.  The melon farmer.

Cantona was brilliant player. Rooney's not face to lace his boots. Just like Rooney though, he's a chuffing lunatic. But then many players with that stroke of brilliance, are. See also ZZ and Diego.
