Horwich parkway is horrendous after the game.  They let so many on they the platform and then they have you queuing outside the station.

It may be worth leaving the game a few minutes early and getting to the station as soon as you can, before the queues form.

I think the trains are every half an hour into Manchester, so you'll need to leg it a few minutes early to get the one at 4.45, otherwise you might have to wait until quarter past which would be cutting it fine for a 6pm train from Manchester.  They used to put a football special on about 5pm, but that was five years ago when I lived in Horwich, so not sure if that's the case any more.  It's only a minute or two's walk to the station from the ground, so duck out just before quarter two and you'll be fine.

If you get caught up in the queue outside you could see several trains going passed before you even make it onto the platform.

Never been on the villa coaches before, was considering doing it this time, does anyone reckon I should go on the coaches or go in the car?

(don't mean to hijack the thread but didn't want to waste a whole thread on it)

Only two trains any use to you are,
Horwich Pkwy dep 1647, arr Picc 1718, or,
H. Pkwy dep 1729, arr Picc 1756.
There'll be several go straight through between those times. As someone else said, they often stop a couple of these at Horwich to help get the crowds away.

Even though the station is right next to the ground, I think you might be struggling.  Have you got a connection at Piccadilly at six on the dot?

It was terrible last time I was there (season before last), but I don't think our alternative option of getting a taxi to the main station in Bolton (20 quid - it really is bloody miles away) was any quicker. Less waiting around I suppose, but no time advantage. Going to just grin and bear the queue this time round.
