Overhyped? The Rooney goal - 10% Villa
« on: February 14, 2011, 09:07:42 AM »
Sour grapes perhaps but is it just me or are the media totally going overboard about Rooney's goal? It was good but do we really need centre-fold posters of it in some of the newspapers this morning? Was it any better than Trevor Sinclair's goal for QPR all those years ago or even Berbatov's goal against Liverpool earlier in the season?
Had it been scored by a Villa, Everton or even a Spurs player i don't think it would have got anywhere near as much coverage. Petrov's goal against Derby three years ago had been forgotten by all non-Villa fans  by the following week whilst there have been numerous goals scored over the last few years that haven't been raved about as much ie Dempsey's goal for Fulham vs Juventus last season.
Makes me sick how the media and even the Man Yoo fans are wanking all over him now after his "performances" in the World Cup and the transfer business where he held them to ransom. I still think he'll bugger off in the summer anyway to Real Madrid.

No overhype for me, given the occassion, circumstance and timing of the goal, it was simply a stunning strike

This one was scored in Sweden the other week. Very Van Basten like.

Good goal but it was inevitably going to be over hyped because super Wayne Rooney scored it. As you say there have been a number of equally good goals but because there not scored by a ‘superstar’ player playing for super duper Man U there immediately forgotten about.

I thought our former defenders goal against the noses was equally good.

Was Ryan Gigg's goal vs Arsenal any better than Dalian's vs Wimbledon? Both involved a run up the pitch but Dalian started from further back and actually had to dodge some challenges whereas no one even stuck a leg out vs Giggs. Ricky Villa's goal was better than Giggs!

The presenter on Sky News suggested that it was the best goal ever. Well since 1992 anyway.

I thought it was a brilliant goal in all honesty. And in all fairness that centre fold poster's going to sell lots of papers for the plastics
The continous wankfest is getting annoying though. I think Berbatov's overhead kick was better

I know, I was surprised to see that Man U and Citeh had only played each other 13 times at Old Trafford. You'd think it was closer to a hundred.

I've always maintained that Sinclair's goal is the best I've ever seen. Rooney's was spectacular alright but not quite as good.

That wind's me up that does when they do that. Chelsea's record against most teams up to about 1997 must have been pretty mediocre yet you'd never have thought so when they do the head to heads before matches these days. No wonder so many kids these days only support two or three teams.

In fairness it was an incredible goal. The fact that it was a mathc winner, in a derby, between 2 teams going for the league puts it on a level that, unfortunatley, no matter what goal a Villa player scores it wont ever receive the same hype.

What I found ridiculous was Dwight Yorke saying he was delgihted for Rooney "after all he has been through!" What was referring to there? That he was caught out with a prossie or that he threw a temper tantrum until Man U caved in and agreed to pay him 200k a week or whatever he is on? The fact that Dwight was implying that people should have felt sorry for him because he wasnt playing all well is a joke and shows that not only do we have a new breed of footballers that think its ok to act like Rooney, but also a new breed of press who think its ok to justify it.

Oh, to the days of Andy and Ricky.....we can only imagine what lyrics Gray would have waxed over that goal.

that is pretty much the reason that i have cancelled my sky sports subscription...

sick to death of them masterbating over certain clubs and their players, while ignoring the rest, to suit an agenda...

It's a great goal, of that there is no doubt.  But is it a superb strike?  It looks like it's come off his shin in one view.
