Downing was far from superb yesterday. He was also far from woeful.

I don't recall him doing anything outstanding or poor to be honest. He was just ok.

That said, it was backs to the wall, so probably not his type of game.

Think we need to keep Petrov in midfield. He can keep the ball and distribute it well. He also is an expert at attracting fouls in dangerous places. Reo coker offers little alround and Makoun will replace him ....

The real test is Wigan, gerrard got tactics right against Chelsea then did an Oneil and played the same vs Sunderland.

Let's hope he has learned his lesson.

I partly agree with ozzjim about Downing.

Sometimes you think he is real top quality, the next hes a big girls blouse. What does worry me about him is he has'nt got that winning mentality.Ash has it, Delph has it, that desire to be as good as you possibly can be, i'm not sure Downing has that in him.I get the impression off Downing sometimes that he is happy to do just enough.
I think you have something here, good spot

I agree

Our commitment on Saturday was fantastic but I thought we were sitting so deep in the centre of midfield we were bound to get punished. Luckily we didnt but for me in the centre we need Makoun and Delph, Downing wide left and gabby playing off Benty or not playing at all.

The sight of gabby trying to defend in the left back position is just wrong

It was a deliberate plot to sit deep, keep them bogged down in midfield and not allow them space to get in behind. It worked a treat because for all their possession Brad was rarely stretched and it was only when Johnson came on and attacked Clark that they started to really trouble us.

Haven't read the whole thread so apologies if it has already been mentioned but I thought the Cuellar had one of his best games for us.  My MOM.
