« on: January 12, 2011, 07:53:09 PM »
He's looking the likeliest imminent signing. Apparently.

May as well have a new thread about him.

Jean II Makoun is an attacking midfielder who is never shy in getting forward, but he does so with good rewards. Having played in 30 games for Cameroon prior to the 2010 African Cup of Nations the 26-year-old has scored nine goals which is a great return for a midfielder.

His skill and commitment to the team is in no doubt and he certainly is an asset to the Indomitable Lions.

Makoun began his career in his native Cameroon at Cotonsport Garoua, where he was part of the team's youth setup. Following that, he spent time at other Cameroonian sides like Jeunesse Star and Tonnerre Yaoundé, before moving to France, to join Ligue 1 side OSC Lille.

The then young superstar became a firm fixture in the Lille side, making more than 150 appearances for the team in the league, and also playing in the UEFA Champions League. His performances attracted interest from clubs around Europe, including English Premier League sides Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Serie A giants Juventus.

But in the end he signed for the seven time French champions Olympique Lyonnais on a four year contract where he remains at present.

Makoun certainly has African Nations Cup experience having participated for his country in the 2004, 2006 and 2008 events. This experience will come in hand in the 2010 African Cup of Nations tournament.

A bit out of date but interesting

Makoun became a firm fixture in the Lille side, making more than 150 appearances for the side in the league, and playing UEFA Champions League football. His performances attracted interest from clubs around Europe, including English Premier League sides Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Serie A giants Juventus, and French outfits AS Monaco, Olympique de Marseille, and Olympique Lyonnais.[2]

On 16 June 2008, Makoun signed with seven time French champions Olympique Lyonnais on a four year contract.[3] The fee is worth €14 million with Lille set to receive another €1 million based on incentives.[3] Makoun wears the number 17 kit, which was retired in 2003 after the death of Cameroonian midfielder Marc-Vivien Foé.[4] Makoun, also from Cameroon and a native of Yaoundé, stated on wearing the number: "In memory of Marc, for me and for the whole Cameroon, this will be for something."

On 16 February 2010, Makoun scored the only goal in Lyon's first leg UEFA Champions League knockout round win over Real Madrid at Stade Gerland by hitting a looping shot from 25 yards out over the head of goalkeeper Iker Casillas and into the top corner of the net in the 47th minute.

In the month of January 2011, he signed for the greatest team on the planet Aston Villa , with Makoun saying " I think I have found heaven "

Don't see why not. They're completely different types of players. And it's not as if any of our current (experienced) central midfielders are worth sticking with long-term.

Nigel Reo-Coker but a competent footballer to go with it.

Or Michael Essien-lite.

Wow! He might even be as good as Dejeba x 2 or even Salifou!

At lease with Houllier, we've got some idea who we might be signing. Good or bad, we're not kept in the dark like under MO'N
