It's hard to argue with that statement. He did his best for us though and scored a few good goals

I think it's more to do with him being one of the most petualnt pricks ever to grace a Villa shirt.

that too. I was being polite in saying he wasted what he had by acting a cock a lot of the time.

at one point he was threatening to become a really excellent footballer. Shame it was only a threat and never actually materialized.

My thoughts too - another story of what might have been

He actually did well at Bradford and his contract ended on Jan 1. They couldn't afford to keep him on, not because he wanted an exorbitant amount but something like 7 players were coming to the end of their short-term contracts. they had to make cuts and the biggest earner went. Bradford fans liked him and thought he was a class above the division. Good luck to him.

Here here.

and another good luck from me, he never did reach his fullpotential in a Villa shirt, but I liked him all the same

The trouble with Hendrie is that he came to prominance in one of Villa's 'too comfortable' periods.  There was little pressure to keep on improving.  Players that were not quite good enough were kept around too long and I am sure this had an effect on the qulaity of the young players coming through.  Ultimately, we paid for it through the DOL years.

We must make sure we keep on developing young players and be quite ruthless about moving on those that do not look as though they will improve us.  There are very few meaningful reserve team matches now that we cannot afford to us places to keep playing the like of Osbourne, Salifou etc.

Bach to Hendrie, a wasted talent for the want of strong management.  If he had been at Man Utd, for example, could you see SAF allowing him to fall back the way he did.  Barry almost went the same way.

I know I have posted this before, but I remember telling a friend at the time that Hendrie was 'the new Gascoigne'. Which he turned out to be, but not in the respect I meant...

Good luck to him. I saw him on his debut at QPR in 1995, when he got sent off - unluckily - for 2 yellow cards. My favourite memory, however, is his debut (and only appearance) for England in 1998, when he came on for Paul Merson and almost scored with just about his first touch, rolling the ball narrowly past the far post.

Most Expensive Player in Indonesia

Quote
Bandung FC make English the only players who play in Indonesia, Lee Hendrie as the most expensive player in the history of national football.
As is known, this afternoon at the office LPI Ampera area, South Jakarta, the former Aston Villa player was officially introduced as a player Bandung FC. Present on the occasion, CEO of Bandung FC M Kusnaeni, LPI Spokesperson Abi Hasantoso, and General Manager of LPI Arya Abiseka.
"Recruitment is also in order to enhance the prestige of LPI. I hope there is another world players who join clubs LPI, "said Arya.
"We can not explain the value of your duration of two years. What is clear enough, "he added.
Similar pronounced Abi, according to Hendrie's going to be one of the icons of LPI, because of its status as the first Premiership player to play in Indonesia.
"Pay Younghusband brothers were lost. Hendrie became the most expensive in Indonesia, "said Abi reveals little about salary Hendrie veil.
Abi further added, Hendrie rejected the offer under the British division club, Mansfield Town FC Bandung for more lucrative bid.
Hendrie, 33 years old midfielder, was recorded as a Villa player during 1995-2007. But in that period was loaned out to Stoke City. Had to make England in 1998, but played only once since losing to compete with David Beckham. Bradford City last club was a fight in the Championship division or one level below the Premier League.

Can't blame him for turning down that ****** of a club Mansfield.

He was a perfect example of what is wrong with modern football. Plenty of talent, but the wrong attitude.

I bet he is skint too.

Another story in Daily Mail today about it.  Claims he's "globally known" and will "be appointed our football ambassador for coaching grassroot and youth development players in Bandung"

Jesus...
