Penalty saves?
« on: December 12, 2010, 06:26:25 PM »
Just been thinking about the rumours that were looking to offload big brad in Jan for a new keeper. Just seen gomes save a pen from drogba and got me wondering has brad ever saved a penalty for us? Sure he was not formidable at saving pens at Blackburn either? Out of all the keepers in the prem I'm sure 'he' must have the worst pen save ratio!?

He saved one against Reading on his debut in a friendly IIRC, but I'm not sure he's ever saved on in a competitive game for us.

He's not a particulaly good shot stopper. His strengths are in other areas.

If we ever get to a penalty shoot-out in which he is a starter and we have a sub left I would swap him for Guzan.

Guzan was fantastic in the league cup shoot out up in Sunderland last season, I don't know the rest of his game though.

As of Aug 2209, eh? How many has he faced and saved in competetive games for us? Ever since Guzan mentioned that he waited for the striker to hit the ball before he moved I've watched keepers and their penalty saving attempts and not only do keepers tend to go very early, you tend to find that most penalties that are taken are very rarely of the unsaveable variety - i.e. right into the corners.

One leads to the other though. You'll find that a lot of the ones that are stroked into the middle of the goal or that are seemingly easy are only put there once they have seen that the keeper is committed they are okay to take an 'easy' penalty.

If keepers started standing in the middle of the goal until they saw what was happening we would start to see a lot more belted to the corners.
