A new defence the cornerstone of a new team
« on: December 11, 2010, 06:01:40 PM »
We suffered like beasts, as usual, but at least today with WBA  we saw what means not to have a player that gifts the opponents three chances to score every game.
How long did it take to GH to drop Dunne?
And Lichaj looks better than L. Young (not a supehuman effort, to be honest).
Now I am waiting for Clark instead of Collins and then we'll have a defence for 3/4 new. We must keep Warnock for a dramatic lack of alternatives, but a new defence can be the corner-stone of a new team.

With the pair Clark-Cuellar should stop that awful habit (that we had with Dunne & Collins) of belting the ball clear instead of trying and create from the back.
That could be the start of a new era?

I thought Collins was ok today really, but Cuellar was much much better than Dunne has been this season!
I think Cuellar and Collins would be my choice of centre backs for the short term, but I agree with you Archie; I'd like to see Cuellar and Clarke as our long term defensive pair.

Lichaj also looked good today which is promising, and may well see Beye shipped out sooner rather than later. As most have spotted though, Warnock is causing serious cause for concern. Increasingly desperately, we need a new first choice left back........but who, I really have no idea!

Warnock has been shite, but he played well today. He never slid in giving needless tackles away and di his best against a tricky winger.

He also made an amazing run which he should do more often.

I think the team looked alot more confident with Cuellar in.

Lichaj for me, is our new right back, was up against a skillfull player and was good in possession going forward.

I have too say aswell NRC made a huge difference to our presence in the midfield.

Friedel did not have to touch the ball today which is also a factor

Lichaj was my man of the match a proper defender and some great tackling. Cuellar was excellent and it was nice to see NRC & Heskey back

Though Warnock still had a few shaky moments, and let Tyoki or whatever his name is, get at him too easily. Had WBA attacked down our left more, they'd have had more joy.

That said it was still a much better game from Warnock today than normal.

Still, I'd be tempted to put Clark at left back for a while. He's good on the ball, he can defend, and he's got a cool head. Plus he's big and won't get beaten as much in the air.

I thought Collins grew in confidence as the game wore on and soon got back in the swing thanks to Cueller anchoring things. They played together brilliantly against Wolves, so I see that as a good pairing.

I was told today that Collins and Cueller dont get on and dint even speak to each other for some reason. It may be a load of rubbish but I watched them closely today and I don't think they spoke two words.

Didn't stop them playing well together though.

Carlos is our best defender by a mile and the way he covered Lichaj out really helped him out.

I think Clark is a little way off being first choice, I don't think he is commanding enough in the air yet but it won't be long.

I can't see that to be honest, I can't back it up but I just think its crap

You may be right but I remember they had a spat on the pitch against wolves and watch how they react to each other on the pitch.

Keep Lihaj at right back and use Luke at left back.

Warnock really worries me these days

I was very impressed with Lichaj today.   Looks a hard bastard.  I like rugged players.

Lichaj had a great game yesterday and if he is gonna stay in the team think we should make his long throw a major part of our set pieces. Thought Warnock had a a much better game and has been working on timing and positioning. Albrighton was fantastic and we really are not the same team without him .................
