Squad rotation vs under strength sides
« on: November 11, 2010, 04:01:34 PM »
I see Holloway is threatening to resign if he's done for fielding an under strength side.

Two points:
- every time a manager is under scrutiny are they going to threaten to leave/not talk to media a la Redknapp? If so I'd be interested to see if any actually carry this out
- if he gets punished for changing the team will this rule also apply to Big 4 teams who do this regularly? If they don't charge him how is that consistent with Wolves being fined last season?

The FA have made a rod for their own back on this one.

If they are asking for 25 players to be named before the start of the season and you use any of those 25 players in a game , then its OK...

Spot on. Who the manager puts in his team of 11 is up to him as long as they are from the 25.
The FA should be told to jog on.

I'm no fan of Wolves, but the fact they did what Fergie has been doing for years was and got done over it was outrageous.

Also, it's too subjective to effectively police.  Who's to say that Holloway did not objectively pick that side as the best one for the game when it's all about opinions?

Totally agree with Holloway. If he had played the youth team then fair enough, but if they are in the squad then there is no argument. Also, if they take any action because a club has to play the "strongest possible team" then where is the line to be drawn? Should clubs have action taken for resting one player, three players or all eleven? Every team (except MON) rest players so if you can rest one player surely you can rest 11 if a manager desires?
It will onlyb end up managers "playing the game" with the FA if any action is taken and say throughout the week that player x,y,z have all taken knocks in training and are unavailable now.

considering blackpool almost beat us aswell, Holloway does have an argument, and Wolves should be refunded the fine they paid if this is the case.

If they are in the 25 man squad that has been submitted then they must be considered first team players.

fully agree, a 25 man squad is required---surely a manager/coach can select his team from this 25----Holloway said he "picked a side he thought could beat Aston Villa" and they very nearly did,!!!can,t see a problem,if it was Chelsea,Man City,Arsenal,Man Utd, then it would be called "squad rotation"--i say let Holloway get on with it,take a train mr. premier league!!!!!!!

My only problem with saying that they must come from the 25 players named as the squad is that the end of the season, if you have nothing to play for, you might want to try a few youngsters out. This would stop you doing it.

yeah I totally agree with Holloway, so If Blackpool had beat us would the FA have still threatened to fined Blackpool?

I mean they outplayed us first half and were minutes from getting at least a point.

Did Wolves actually get fined last season i thought it was a suspended fine? But in doing that the FA have made a rod for their own back you sometimes wonder whats happened to common sense these days

The fine was suspended so they've paid nothing.

I'm with Holloway and McCarthy on this one - surely the manager picks the team
and not the idiots in the Premier League

I've just heard Holloway's after match interview (most of it anyway).  Quite agree with what he has to say.  All players train together and he picked who he thought could do a job bearing in mind travel and play us last night and travel back and then tomorrow have to travel to London for the West Ham game.

Also, like others have said, my thoughts are that all teams had to name a 25 man squad at the beginning of the season so,  as long as those who played last night are in that 25,  he is just using his squad - rather like other teams do.

Rather like all champions league teams do on a regular basis before an important midweek match.  I can't see the problem doing it either, it is utter madness.
