I wanted Owen when he went to Manchester United.

I now admit I was very, very wrong.

It's only September mind!

Scorec 9 goals in 31 games for Man Utd last season and i would say that many of those games were ones where he came on as a sub. There is still a question mark over his injuries, but if we could get him relatively cheaply i would say it's definately still worth a punt, with Houllier being in charge.

A fit michael owen would score more goals for us than gabby or Carew , owen is a prolific finisher a d we have lacked that for years, maybe on a pay as you play basis ?

As if he's going to agree to that.

He doesn't seem to have much of an appetite for the game these days, added to his appalling fitness record I don't see it as being a gamble worth taking.

I've stickied this as it will only be a matter of time before we are linked with everyone who Houllier ever signed.

I would bet money that we see our first link to Djibril Cissé within two weeks.

Providing it's not:

*Florent Sinama Pongolle
*Anthony Le Tallec
*Bruno Cheyrou
*Titi Camara
*Erik Meijer
*Rigobert Song
*Sean Dundee
*Djimi Traore
*Peggy Arphixad
*Gregory Vignal
*Igor Biscan
* El Hadj Diouf
*Salif Diao

I can probably live with it.

I'll stick my neck out further and predict links between now and January 31st with:

Jerzy Dudek
John Arne Riise
Chris Kirkland
Sami Hyypia
Djibril Cissé as already mentioned.

Incidentally, Sinama-Pongolle has become a fairly decent player over the last few seasons and probably doesn't deserve to be in your list. Atletico Madrid paid £8m for him a couple of seasons ago and he's still only 25.

I know there aren't that many of them at the moment, but can't we sign someone French and good? Youri Gourcuff will do..

Third choice there isn't he? behind Sergio Aguero and Forlan.

No shame in that I suppose.

Still would not want.

Same with:

*Harry Kewell
*Bernard Diomede
*Abel Xavier
*Milan Baros x2

No, he was but was sold to Sporting Lisbon. Who then loaned him to Real Zaragoza.

I am afraid this is not going to be the case now not for PL anyway. As far as playing football at top level  Owen is  no go...wait for him to announce his retirement this season. .  Good luck to him  he is a very wealthy man so I am sure he will get on with his life.

A loan move for January-May might be a good move. Same salary, assess his fitness and in the unlikely event that he proves his fitness and gets amongst the goals we sign him on a free transfer in the summer.

The problem with someone like Owen is that if you sign someone with that  fitness record you want them to offer something off the pitch as well.  As Owen's entire career was based on pace and instinct there's very little he can teach our young players.  Add in the belief that his heart isn't in football anymore and I just don't see the benefit.

I'd go with that. We're not likely to spend big on a striker, and we could really do with an extra option. As long as we don't pay money for him, if we can get 10-15 games from him, and hopefully a few goals, it might be worth a punt. January is unlikely to see much action for us, and I don't see GH getting to really transform the team till next summer. We could do worse.

The cup final last season though perfectly summed up Michael Owen in a matter of minutes. Gets a chance, finishes it. Then hobbles off injured.

The thing is, as little as he's played at United - when he does start he scores more often than not.
