What is your starting XI and bench?
« on: September 01, 2010, 09:16:19 AM »
Seen as the window is shut; with the squad as it is now, what starting XI would you play and who would be on the bench. Then next window and later down the season be nice to see what has changed.

For me:

------------------Brad Snr

L.Young---Collins---Clark---Warnock

------------------Petrov (c)

----------Ireland---------Downing*

Albrighton-----------------------A.Young

--------------------Gabby

*note if Delph was fit he would be in place of Downing.

Bench:
Guzan,Cuellar,Dunne,NRC,Delph*,Carew,Fonz

That still leaves youngsters like:

Andreas Weimann;Eric Lichaj;Shane Lowry
Barry Bannan;Nathan Baker;Jonathan Hogg being able to push to get on the bench.

Which in my view means we could get rid of:
Sidwell;Heskey;Beye;Ozzy;Davies. - around 150k a week in wages!!!

So what is your team; I think it will be interesting to see how it changes up to January's window.

With all players fit.

---------------------Friedel
--------L.Young Dunne Collins Warnock
--------------------NRC
-------------Delph--------Ireland
---Albrighton-----------------------A.Young
------------------Agbonlahor

I'll go with Albrighton over Downing everyday of the week. Downing is a pussy.

Friedel
Young - Collins - Dunne - Warnock
NRC - Petrov
Albrighton - Ireland - Young
Gabby

Guzan - Cuellar - Clark - Sidwell - Downing - Carew - Delfouneso

I really wanted to put Cuellar in for Warnock and swap Young over. I'm not a Warnock fan as of late.

Agbonlahor

Collins, Delph (when fit) and Albrighton should be very close, of course. Carew is in contention when he is in form (not now), and in this case Agbonlahor could be pushed out wide. Heskey can be put on as a workhorse sub on the wing when we need to defend a lead.

EDIT: Bench is thus: Guzan, Collins, Delph, Albrighton, Sidwell, Carew, Heskey.

I see most are pushing Young back out wide when he's been pretty effective in the middle and clearly wants to play there. I reckon if we want to hasten his departure asking him to play second fiddle to Ireland is a great way to go about it.

I'd go with John M. I think Delph is still a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment.

Well, its Ireland's best (possibly his only) position and Young is still effective on the wing (swapping flanks with Albrighton). I dont think asking him to play one of his natural positions should be cause for him wanting to move.
I'd still play Young behind the striker on occasion and ask him to drift in from the wings too, just to keep the oppostion on their toes.

Word for word, thats how i see it. I would rotate with Collins, Albrighton and particularly Delph when fit. And Carew, if he gets himself in shape.

In terms of letting a borderline England International dictate how we play (as Chris suggested) just because he wants it that way (if indeed he does, which i doubt), the club would be in a very sorry state of affairs.

The way I see it, Young is playing in the role Ireland is best suited to.  We tried using both of them against Newcastle and look what happened.  Playing that way means we need cover for the back 4, which NRC provides.  So it's a choice between dropping one of them of shifting Ash wide, I think shifting Ash wide is the better option.

Actually, I only excluded Delph due to his longterm injury.  Once he's fit I'd be trying to get him in the side, probably for either Petrob or NRC, as soon as possible!
