Current Player contracts
« on: September 01, 2010, 07:50:56 AM »
As far as I can tell based on googling news on their signings, here is the current squad and when their contracts run out :

End of season, 2011 :
Friedel, Guzan (?), NRC, Carew, Osbourne (?)

End of season, 2012 :
L Young, A Young, Heskey, Davies, Gabby, Albrighton, Sidwell, Beye, Cuellar (?), Salifou (?), Delfouneso

Later :
Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Ireland, Delph, Downing, Petrov

Ive highlighted the ones I would see as 'deadwood' - I would estimate they are costing us £200k a week - thats £10 million a year in wages that could be spent on better players or rewarding a couple of the younger ones with professional contracts.

by the way, I have a different view of what constitutes the deadwood than to others obviously.  When a new manager joins he has to work out a plan to 'get rid' and also to get a lot of those others - eg A Young, gabby, extended beyond summer 2012.

We need to get a manager in asap and the first thing he needs to do is get a few of them ie the two youngs, gabby, albrighton, cuellar and delfouneso on long term contracts.

If it were my money, I'd pay up the contracts on a few of the deadwood (the money I would have spent in the transfer window)) and start afresh.

Why does it matter whether we pay it to them in one go or in monthly installments? At least that way we can send them round local schools and hospitals. Or to collect cones in training.

Quick vote:  would you extend Carew's contract?
I think I would have been tempted to accept the reported £4m from that Turkish club to be honest.

Carew whilst not in good form is still a good player, and one we can't afford to sell.

Definately renew, he is our most prolific goal scorer.
He was very unlucky not too score against west ham, I think he will start scoring when he is coming off the bench, when Gabby is fit!

My fear is that he'd want a 3-year deal on big-ish money and we'd end up with another Hesky (old, big wages and not playing regularly).

Hopefully he'd be happy to wind down his career (and earnings) with us, as I think he'd be a very useful guy to have on the bench.
