Martin O'Neill "Couldn't Care Less" About Transfer
« on: August 04, 2010, 09:18:15 AM »
Quote
MARTIN O’NEILL has warned Aston Villa fans to stop moaning about the lack of transfer activity, insisting: “I couldn’t care less what people think.”

O’Neill has earned him- self the nickname ‘Martin No Deal’ at Villa Park because of his notorious slow-motion attitude to bringing in new players.

Villa have yet to do any business this summer despite the new Premier League season being less than a fortnight away. O’Neill is still refusing to elaborate on any interest in Aiden McGeady, amid reports that the Celtic winger is holding out for a move to Villa Park after rejecting a £9.5m switch to Spartak Moscow.

West Ham’s Scott Parker and Wigan’s Hugo Rodallega also remain on the Villa radar, along with Everton’s Steven Pienaar, but Villa have yet to add a new face to their squad.

Part of the reason for that is that Manchester City are refusing to meet their £28m valuation of  James Milner, which is having a knock-on effect on in-coming deals.

And six fringe players who O’Neill is hoping to sell to raise futher funds have been unable to secure moves away from Villa Park.

O’Neill is working to bring in the reinforcements he feels the claret and blues need to challenge for the top four, domestic cups and Europa League.

And the Villa boss defended his policy of taking his time over signings, citing the success of Stephen Warnock, James Collins and Richard Dunne. Warnock arrived after last season had already kicked off, with Dunne and Collins joining on transfer deadline day. Not that O’Neill is losing any sleep over it, or his reputation for being a ditherer in the transfer market.

“Really, I’m not remotely interested,” he said. “Honestly, I couldn’t care less whether I get unfairly criticised.  “What I will say is the business that we did in the last few days of August last year really made our season. “Those three players coming in – Stephen Warnock and the two centre-backs – were absolutely supreme for us. “It was so important to get those three players in, so personally, if I had to wait until the last couple of days because of circumstances, then I would.”

O’Neill is refusing to panic about the lack of arrivals or departures and, although he doesn’t like the transfer window, is happy to use every last minute of it to do the right deals. “Those are the rules so you go by the rules and you run that length of time. That’s absolutely fi ne. It’s not a problem,” he said.

Yeah, I know it's the Daily Star

it was in the express and star last night also!

i feel mon gets bad press and everyone is a little impatient but just my opinion!
There were 2 bulls, father and son,  and they were standing on a hill overlooking a meadow full of cows! The son says to his dad, dad quickly, there is a field full of cows there, lets run down there and fuck one! The father looks at his son and says, i tell you what son, why dont we walk down there and fuck them all!

Have a little patience all!

I'm on his side with this one. Despite wanting him sacked for the past season and a bit I won't criicise his transfers or his methods.

The only flip side is that it could have an impact on our opening games if we play them under strengthas it were. It'd be interesting to see the stats for the games that we have played under MON from the start of the season until the end of the August transfer window. January I'd leave aside as not much is done then by anyone save the odd exception here and there.

I don't know why it is that he takes his time, or what other 'market forces' are in play that effect things, but for me the who we get is much more important than when we get them!

I for one dont really like the "could not care less" attitude we as supporters care about our club and we want to progress there is nothing wrong with that so why come out with stupid quote's like that.

I think it's a silly comment to make , far rather say "that's their opinion but I'm the manager" than antagonise people with his "I couldn't get less what they think"!

This is our club martin, and we will be here long after you are gone-I find his comments typical of him, stubborn and arrogant like cloughie maybe, but as a manager not fit to lace cloughies boots!

So what is wrong with this?

The title of this thread is actually the headline in the Star (minus the 's' in 'transfers' which it won't let me add for some reason).

I don't mind his attitude, I also couldn't care less what you lot think of my work, so long as my boss is happy.

I do however reserve my right to state that I think waiting till the season is underway to make signings is the wrong approach.  Just because you have until the 1st September doesn't mean you leave everything until then.

As always, this is the answer to a question rather than MON wanting to make a statement.  So, if the question was "What do you say to people who think you're slow in the market?", we get the above answer, but if he was asked the more precise "What do you say to fans who are concerned about the lack of activity?", I'm sure it would be something a lot different.

Don't get offended by thinking it's the latter he was answering when I'm sure it was the former!

As someone posted earlier it is alike buying a house in as much as there is a chain - once one starts then everything will start rolling - i would imagine the catalyst is Man City - if they stump up the cash for Milner then that will start the ball rolling

So far they have only spent their money over seas i think

Isn't that like saying you couldn't care less about the Villa, being as it is MON's decisions and methods that directly affect the fortunes of the club?
