Who on earth were European Super Cup Final qualifiers Magdeburg?

1974 EUROPEAN SUPER CUP FINAL - Not played
Qualifying teams:  Bayern Munich v Magdeburg

Magdeburg is a city in the former East Germany. To be fair, they did well to even qualify for this final since the favoured team of the Stasi (secret police) were Dynamo Berlin. The next best teams were Dynamo Dresden and Lokomotiv Leipzig. It wasn't uncommon for the Stasi to rip the hearts out of teams that had built up nice little squads in their quest for dominance.

Interestingly, if you like that sort of thing, Dynamo Berlin still exist but in the regional Oberliga, having gone bankrupt a long time ago. They petitioned the DFB to get stars on their shirts for winning more than 10 titles but were refused as the DFB refused to recognise their claim on the now defunct DDR-Oberliga.

There is no surprise the final went unplayed - West German and East German teams rarely met in competition due to the potential for defection and political tension. Also, many in the DDR would have supported Bayern because of their hatred of the DDR regime.

Red Star Belgrade (and Partizan, for that matter)
Aberdeen
PSG
Napoli
Brondby
Young Boys Berne

Dukla Prague
CSKA Sofia (we could have played them in Rotterdam- Bayern were 3-0 down in the 1st leg of the Semi at one point before pulling it back)
Honved
Ujpest Dozsa
Antwerp
St. Etienne
Dynamo Berlin

They play in the same stadium as Bayern. That must be like Espanyol being forced to squat in the Nou Camp.

Ever heard of The Slap? Around the time 1860 were playing in this final, a young Franz Beckenbauer was playing in a Munich youth tournament, preparing to sign schoolboy forms for 1860, his favourite team. Then in a game against the Lions, one of their players slapped Beckenbauer. He said at the moment he stopped wanting to play for 1860 and joined Bayern instead. Then went on to win three European Cups and a World Cup, amongst others, while a Bayern player.

Anderlecht used to be quite big as well, didn't they? Allegedly, their president was a bit of a dodgy character.

Dukla Prague

We played them in the 2000/2001 Intertoto under the name Marila Pribram. They hit the skids when the Czech Army withdrew their support.

Anyway... Honved or Kispest Honved as they became
