Reserve Fixtures

From Pravda:

Quote
Villa's reserve side, winners for the third consecutive year of the Barclays Premier Reserve League South last season, will kick off the 2010-11 campaign with a trip to Manchester City.

Last year's national play-off finalists begin their season in the new and revamped three-division Barclays Premier Reserve League competition with a tough away assignment on Tuesday, August 31.

A revised format will see Kevin MacDonald's team compete in the Southern Group along with Arsenal, Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion, West Ham and Wolves - and the team will also play against clubs from Northern Groups A and B during the 20-game season.

Following new guidelines issued by the Premier League in response to the flexibility required by clubs, especially those clubs involved in European competition, some home games will be played on afternoons at Bodymoor Heath.

Villa's first home game will be against Blackpool at Bodymoor Heath on Monday, September 6 [kick-off 2pm], while the Claret and Blues are also pencilled in to take on Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham and Everton at Bodymoor.

However, there will still be plenty of action taking place at Villa Park, including derby fixtures against Wolves [October 18] and West Brom [November 22], along with exciting clashes with Arsenal [January 10], Chelsea [February 21] and Liverpool [April 4 which] are all scheduled to take place at the stadium.

The expanded competition means there will be two Northern Groups, with the winners of these groups playing off to determine the Northern League winners.

The Northern League winners will play the Southern Group winners to determine the Barclays Premier Reserve League play-off champions.

The club recognises the passion of supporters who follow our reserve team in action throughout the season and, in order to avoid anyone missing the action, the club will broadcast games to be played at Bodymoor Heath on our website at www.avfc.co.uk. Full details will follow.

I think they should put barbed wire up around every reserve game, install landmines at Bodymoor Heath and get O'Leary to manage the team. That ought to stop anyone attending... which seems to be the plan.

Just like in the olden days isn't it - mid-afternoon, mid-week ressie run-outs?

In the proper olden days, reserve games were played on Saturday at 3pm. Very often against the the same club that the first team were playing away to. You got the half time score of the first team by looking at the letter A on the big wooden score box on the witton terracing. No internet, television, live radio coverage then. Modern fans dont know they are born!
Pre-substitute days so the reserve team would be just that, the next 11 players after the ones who hadnt been sent to play for the first team. No bench filled with a load of substitutes because your not playing very well, or your getting tired, or your legs a bit broken. Modern players dont know they are born!

I think that the afternoon kick offs/games at Bodymoor may be a way of saving some money....if u look at the fixtures those games are against the
smaller clubs, ie West Ham, etc. all the games against the bigger teams like Chelsea, Arsenal are evening kick offs at Villa Park where they may attract more of a crowd. It must be expensive to put reserve team games on at VP where playing the lesser teams @ Bodymoor would hardly incur any costs as they will be behind closed doors

I've regularly supported the 'reserves' over many years and there have been times (quite often) when it's been more enjoyable than the 'first teamers'

Playing at Bescot and even the longer journey down the A5 in Leicestershire hasn't deterred me but it looks like the kids will effectively be playing behind closed doors till mid-Oct

This decision to play at Bodymoor won't encourage families who can't afford Premier to support Villa will it

Clearly a cost cutting exercise - whatever next - 5 a side at PowerLeague?

I've always thought that they could use the reserve games as a way to promote the club. Make reserve home games "family games", with activities for the kids. Enter the Brum Senior Cup and / or play friendlies at non-league grounds to promote the Villa to the suburbs. It would be good for Villa because generally our reserves are comprised of promising youngsters that people do actually want to watch.

Seems they have chosen to go in totally the opposite direction and prefer it if no one sees or cares about the reserves.
