89/90 or 92/93?

both finished runners-up but which did you think was the better side?

both seasons were full of memorable moments.
89-90 had a prolific David Platt who scored 25 odd goals, a solid defensive unit in Kent Nielsen, Mountfield and Paul McGrath, the vision of Gordon Cowans and the flair of Tony Daley. after a slow start we had an amazing run of wins and only petered out of the championship race right in the last few games. We scored 57 from 38 games.

92-93 was arguably a more attractive side. we had no one player as  prolific as Platt but with the likes of Atkinson and Saunders in the side the goals were spread around more and were generally of a very high quality. The  defence was equally as solid - the odd slip up aside. We scored 57 from 42 games.

In both seasons we had a very good record against our rivals at the top of the table (norwich aside in 1992-93). The 1993 side was never as consistent in the league again after this season but did manage a cup whereas the 1990 team promptly went into decline.

Which team do you prefer/think was better?

92/93 - as I don't remember the previous one, I was too young.

I thought we had a really good chance to win the league on both occasions.  I think the 92-93 team were better overall, though.

I remember that run of wins for the 89/90 side - it didn't matter who they were playing, they would win, although I put a lot of it down to David Platt in the midfield and Sir Graham at the helm.

The 92/93 were far more exciting to watch though.

from late sept through to febuary of 89/90 we won all bar 2 or 3 games i think. xmas that year was wonderful. 3-0 wins over Man U and Chelsea (neither of whom were that good at the time) and 2-1 over arsenal.

Both seasons were equally exciting, plus we had a bit of a cup run in 1990 too.  We'd have won it too if it hadn't been for Oldham and that bloody pitch.  Can still remember us going top of the league away at Spurs, I'd never seen that before and thought we'd stay there forever...

92/93 was by far the better team but 89/90 was much more enjoyable for being so unexpected. You only have to consider where we finished the season before and the season after to realise how unexpected it was! Great memories of that season: 6-2 v Everton, Man U on Boxing Day (Fergie, Fergie on the dole), Platt's winner against Arsenal, going top at Spurs, a good Cup run - 6-0 against Port Vale and beating Albion away, and the last game of the season at Goodison is one of my favourite away days ever.

this was the season Daley scored against Luton after running the length of the pitch. . I wonder what actually won the overall Goal of the Season in 89-90? anyone remember? was it our Tone?

I have fantastic memories of 89/90. The two games vs Everton particularly. But I voted 92/93 without a moment's hesitation - that was by far the better team.

89/90 because I was based in England and therefore went to lots of games. In 92/93 I was in Germany and missed most of them.

I remember it like that as well but when you watch it Gareth Williams passed to him when he was about ten yards inside the Villa half.

As for Goal Of The Season he didn't win it as it is BBC competition and ITV had exclusive rights at that point. Gascoigne's effort against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi won it that year. Clicky

I can't fathom how we only scored 57 goals in each season considering the riches of talent we had in attack. I suppose those barren runs of form really were barren.

if you take away the promotion season in 87-88 we've pretty much been starved of goals - compared to alot of other teams - from about 1984 through to 2006.  we seemed destined to get between from 46 to 50 during the course of our years in the Premier League up until last seasons brilliant tally of 70 odd.

edit that should read 2007. we werent exactly prolific in MON's 1st season.  ](*,)
