Given that they are playing the Pirates, they will probably get off to a great start.   Read into that absolutely nothing.

Not the start the cubs were looking for!

They haven't had a 'winning' season in 15 years.   Winning = won more games than they lost.

A Phillies fan, a Mets fan, & a Yankees fan are climbing a mountain & arguing about who loves his team more.

The Mets fan insists he is the most loyal. He shouts ''This is for the Mets!'' & jumps off the mountain.

Not to be outdone, the Philllies fan is next to profess his love for his team. He shouts "This is for the Phillies!!!" & pushes the Yankees fan off the mountain.

Fat Boy Blanton got the bats behind him after a Hamels-like performance against the Mets yesterday - pitches 3 scoreless innings then gives up 7 runs in 1.1 innings:

                          IP      H    R    ER    BB    K    HR
J. Blanton    4.1     10    7      7       2    6    1

The bats always seem to be silent when Hamels is crashing and burning.....

I'll translate:

Joe Blanton pitched 4 and 1/3 innings* (IP) during which time the Mets got 10 hits (H) and scored 7 runs (R), 7 of which they earned** (ER).  He also walked (W) two batters, struck out (KO) 6 and gave up a home run (HR).

*To be credited with pitching all or part of an inning, a pitcher must record at least one out. Blanton faced a number of betters in the 5th inning but omnly managed to record one out. It is not uncommon for a pitcher t6o face a number of batters in an inning and record 0 outs - the box score will simply state "Pitcher X faced # batters in the #th inning"

** In simple terms, an earned run is recorded when a team scores a run that is not the result of an error by the opposing team - i.e. they earned it.

The stats are the best thing about baseball!
