The Shohei Ohtani Show

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/23026169/the-shohei-ohtani-experience-keep-track-angels-phenom-two-way-quest

I'll start by pointing out that my knowledge of baseball is extremely limited. When studying in Michigan in 2002, I went to a number of Detroit Tigers games, but just never understood what was going on.

Fast forward 16 years and I'm now living and working in Japan. My wife, bless her, is a Hokkaido native, and her family are absolutely bonkers for the Nippon Ham Fighters team. One thing I do know is that Ohtani is an absolute god up there. They were distraught when he left for the Major League. Again, knowing very little about baseball still, I have to ask you, UK Redsox: is he that good?

Ohtani is a bit of an experiment for MLB.

There's been a few players recently who've tried to combine pitching with everyday play (Brooks Kieschnick springs to mind), However, they've been marginal players, trying to hang in the Majors by offering teams a bit of both pitching and hitting.

There's also some pitchers who are good enough hitters to act in a pinch-hitting role on days when they're not starting (eg Madison Bumgarner).

Ohtani is the first player for years who's considered a top prospect at both hitting and pitching. More importantly, he's the first one who a team has been willing to give the opportunity to both pitch and hit on a regular basis.

Many top high school / college pitchers are also amongst their team's top hitters but once they turn pro, they're normally forced to do one or the other.

I'd love to watch baseball in Japan.

The Sox opened their season over there a few years ago. I contacted the team to see if they we organising any trips. They weren't and neither was my mate who runs a baseball tour company.
I went ahead and booked another trip only to be contacted by the Sox a few days later and told that they thought running a trip to Japan was a good idea.

For the first time my mate is running a trip to Japan this season. However, due to my father's poor health, I'm reluctant to be away for that long.

Hopefully I'll get over to Japan some day

Thank you for all the information, mate. He sounds like a massive star in the making.

I'm very sorry to hear about your dad's health. I hope he feels alot better soon. If you're ever in Japan, let me know. It'd be great to watch a game with you.

How many hits does he have now, I am too lazy to look it up.

Thanks UKR,  registered, one of my remaining ambitions is to see a MLB game.  No chance of going stateside so hopefully this will do the trick.

It’s not clear yet how tickets will be allocated.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get mine thro MLB.

However, I’ve got a couple of contacts Stateside who can probably sort me out (albeit at a premium)

Baseball star Robinson Cano has been banned for 80 games after testing positive for the banned diuretic Furosemide.

The Seattle Mariners second baseman, one of baseball's highest paid players, has accepted the punishment, his team said.

The 35-year-old, who is halfway through a 10-year $240 million contract, said he took the drug on a visit to his native Dominican Republic.

"He made a mistake," the Mariners said.

Cano is an eight-time MLB All-Star with 305 career home runs and more than 2,400 hits.

He won the 2009 World Series with the New York Yankees.

"We were disappointed to learn today that Robinson had violated the terms of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," the Mariners said. "Our organisation fully supports the programme.

"He has explained to us what happened, accepted the punishment and has apologised to the fans, the organisation and his teammates. We will support Robinson as he works through this challenge."

Diuretics can be used as a masking agent to hide the presence of performance-enhancing drugs or to assist rapid weight loss.

"While I did not realise at the time that I was given a medication that was banned, I obviously now wish that I had been more careful," Cano said in the statement.

"I would never do anything to cheat the rules of the game that I love."

Ever since the Ryan Braun incident, I don't believe any player's denials/excuses regarding drugs

Red Sox are 50 games above .500

Not bad, considering their current cobbled together batting linup

I stayed up until 1am watching most of the Rockies @ Brewers game.

It's been a long time since I've done that.

One of my friends was in the ballpark, so I was messaging back and forth with her
