Title: Finding Chico
Post by: Legion on July 11, 2019, 08:12:44 PM
"Hi hoping you may be able to help me??  I am trying to locate the former Villa player from the late 60's/early 70's Ian "Chico" Hamilton. I am working on behalf of SUEPA Southend United Ex-Players Association.  (See us on Facebook & Twitter).             We were formed back in January 2018 and our aim is to put former team-mates back in touch with each other, and as of today we have just under 200 former ex-players some of whom played for Southend United in the 1950's and 60's. Chico only played at Roots Hall for just under a season signing in Sept.'68 from Chelsea for about £5,000? playing in a total of 40 league & F.A.Cup matches scoring 12 goals before signing for Villa in 1969 for about £40,000?, we currently have 8 players who were team mates of Chico including Billy Best who was the goalscorer for Southend when Villa were beaten 1-0 in the F.A.Cup match back in Nov. 1971. I have been looking over the last few months at various Villa social media sites and I did see a photo of Chico at Villa Park in the last few years & did try to make contact with someone but so far not had any luck so was wondering if there was anyone on this site could/would be able to point me in the right direction.        Any help on this matter would be gratefully    received in our quest for former players.      Many Thanks, David Brabbing."

Maybe suggest they contact Rob Bishop or whatever the former Villa players association is?

Blimey Rob, wasn’t that when you were back from Oz in 2006?

Many years back, I worked with his lad at Kalamazoo in Northfield.

One or two tales of Chico's time in USA playing with George Best. You can guess the rest.

One of my all time favourite Villa players, alongside Pat McMahon
Had the pleasure of meeting him in the Holte pub a few years back
I was looking at some old black and white framed photos on the wall when a hand stretched across my face - a finger pointing to a  particular photo of muddied players taking a communal bath - a voice from behind me said " that's me "
I turned around and was face to face with one of my heroes from the 1970`s - Ian "Chico" Hamilton
I was starstruck and uttered something like  "  olroight mate, how you doin?"
always picture him in the yellow and blue kit

I remember my dad telling me about a goal he scored from an impossible angle, I think it was an FA cup match.

One that sticks in the memory is an approximate hundred yards run-up to take a penalty at Wrexham in the old third division days.  I was stood right in front.  He was so far back when he started his run you needed a telescope to see him.

One of my most memorable and joyful moments in more than 50 years of watching the Villa was Chico's far post header at the Holte End, that put us 2-1 up against Albion in the 1974/75 promotion season.
