Aston Villa Ladies have had a busy day.  Thery've renamed themselves Aston Villa Women and have signed three new players, including a German International Marisa Ewers who was plying her trade in the other lot across the city...

]lhttps://www.avfc.co.uk/News/2019/07/04/aston-villa-women-three-major-signings] (http://lhttps://www.avfc.co.uk/News/2019/07/04/aston-villa-women-three-major-signings)

That, coupled with a commitment by Christian Purslow to put extra funding into the Womens team to me is a statement of intent.   The target appears to be promotion to the top division.

Also I can't see anything about new signings on that link, just the name change?

Not sure where else to put it but Suliman, Clarke, Doyle-Hayes, Ramsey, O'Hare and Hepburn-Murphy are all training with the first team at the moment and will probably get a chance during pre-season. I'm pretty happy with that, I really hope Clarke in particular takes this chance because I think he could become a very good player.

Does anyone know where I can find a fixture list of the Pre season games for the Under 23's and Under 18s ?

Women's League Cup Group Stage has been drawn. We are in the only group that only has one top flight team (Liverpool) so must have a chance of finishing top two and making the Quarter-Finals. Will be a good test for us.

Group A: Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Coventry United, Durham, Liverpool, Sheffield United

Group B: Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion, Bristol City, Charlton Athletic, London Bees, London City Lionesses

Group C: Birmingham City, Everton, Leicester City, Manchester City, Manchester United

Group D: Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Lewes, Reading, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United

So after being denied access to watch the youth team on a Saturday morning they have now switched the reserve games to Bodymore so we can't watch them either.
I know I am in a small minority that follows the second and third Teams but some of us enjoy seeing the young players trying to make the grade and I am pissed off tonight with this latest snub from the Club.  I didn't see this one coming I will admit.

He seems to be at the point where, ability wise, he's right between the U18s and U23s (he's done well in some games for the U23s but has looked a bit naive for them a few times as well) which bodes well give his age. Hopefully him and Ramsey (as effectively 9 and 10) can both establish themselves with the U23 team this year and push each other along.

Aston Villa have beaten a number of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, to secure Nigerian defender Iffy Udanoh, according to reports from his homeland. The 16-year-old is highly rated in Nigeria and is expected to be called up to the U17 side in the coming days. He also holds an American passport and is eligible to play for England.

Along with Liverpool - West Ham and Wolves both gave a trial to the 6ft4 defender who has been likened to Virgil van Dijk.  In total, it is claimed eight Premier League clubs were keen on Udanoh, before he signed with Villa. He was previously playing for non-league, London based side Erith & Belvedere before making the switch to Villa's youth set up. Udanoh will be part of the U18 side on B6 as he looks to impress on his initial deal.

Interesting that Nyland played then. I wonder if there's a deal for the Croatian lad?

Good to read that we were the preferred destination for a young player that is highly thought of. With how these owners (and therefore downwards) place such an emphasis on young players, I really expect our youth teams to be amongst the best over the coming years.

Just got back having taken advantage of the free ticket if you have a men’s season ticket. Could have easily been 5 despite an excellent save in injury time denying Rovers a point. Decent turn out too, the lower trinity looked full. Good standard and very enjoyable.

On a side note, and apologies if this has been mentioned before, but  the official site and social media channels seem to be fairly limited when it comes to reserve/youth team coverage. Appreciate there was a first team game on the same night, but haven’t seen a single mention of this at all.

That's my biggest complaint about the official site, they just don't provide anything like enough coverage of anything below the first team. The worst thing is, I can get al lthe match details and stats I want about the first team all over the internet in far better quality so I hardly ever use the site because where it should have an advantage of keeping fans up to date on the youth teams and getting people familiar with the kids they instead post fluff about it being the birthday of someone who played for us 20 years ago.

Yeah, it’s frustrating. I don’t think it’s ever been particularly great, but there does seem to be a complete absence of anything this season. Just seems strange as I think it’s something that a reasonable portion of fans would be interested in.

I like to keep a eye on the reserves and youth teams but the club make it hard .Their lack of coverage is shocking.I did not even know until just now that the reserves played and lost at Stoke on Monday .I also noticed on the team sheet against Norwich reserves the other week that the reserves are due to play some reserve games at 7pm of a Monday night at Bodymoor Heath .If you dont drive you have no chance of watching the game

It's cause and effect. Our reserves have never been particularly well-attended; I can remember a few hundred of us dotted around the top of the old Witton Lane when other clubs were doing Family Fun Nights and getting almost as many as watched their first teams. That said, though, it must be doubly frustrating for anyone who does like to watch the junior teams to have such a diabolical lack of information.

Couldn't be bothered to start a new thread for this, but do we not have any sort of "Old Stars" team at all, any more?

I was idly wondering if I could add to my number of grounds visited by watching them and researched it. None of Villa Old Stars, Former Players' Association or "Lions and Legends" have Tweeted in the last couple of years.

I know they had fallen out but thought that there might be at least one team still playing somewhere. If not, maybe someone could raise this at the next club meeting? It seems good for players' mental health to still be able to play and they also raised a lot of money for good causes.

The coverage is just basically non existent. I understand it won’t be of interest to everyone, but for those that are (and you’d think given fans desire to see ‘home grown’ players that it would still be significant) it is absolutely pathetic - especially compared to others clubs output.

Just wondering if anyone from here has attended any of the games and what the standard is like and what the average attendance is for these games?

You can watch a few of their games if you download the FA Player App. Watched them away at Charlton and they played well against an admittedly poor team. Some excellent finishes in that game. I think women's football, generally, has at least doubled in standard in the last two decades and is only going to get better.

I keep meaning to get down and watch them in person but their insistence on only playing on Sundays when I'm hung over puts me off. I'd love it if they played on Saturday during the international break.

If they scheduled the womens games a few hours before the first team games kick off then it would benefit the game immensely and generate more interest/support than anything else. It seems pretty obvious so I can only assume there must be unknown reasons why this doesn’t happen.

Cam missed one chance. Wright missed over four. No-one really stood out. Cam had a quiet game by his standards but could have done with a bit better service and more awareness of his runs and movement.

Wright missed a few chances but in the first half especially He was a constant threat to Newcastle.
I thought Cam had a poor game and it was no surprise when He was taken off.   I do like a player who can play a telling pass and Ben Guy always impresses me.  He has a special ability to find a defence splitting pass in every game I see him play.

Thought we played very well but James Chester didn't look anywhere near First Team level and I thought Nyland should have stopped their second goal.
Jake Walker was solid at Right Back and Clarke, Ramsey and Guy all very composed in midfield.

Big gap between First and Second Teams now. #levels

Cam did have a quiet game by his standards as I have said before, but everyone seemed to have an off-day. Remember that Cam is still only 17 and is the only one of the U23s without a pro contract and plays at that level for an absolute pittance in comparison with all the others. He has played consistently really well for them overall since he got his chance and has shown his potential with his call-up and performance for the 1st XI in the cup game. Kodjia, for example, was absolutely dire when he last played for the U23s. Personally, Guy does very little for me and was previously played as forward but did not produce the goods so was shifted position. Regarding the gap, Clarke is 21, has been playing at U23 level for 3 years but still has not, to my knowledge, been offered a loan deal by a lower league club to get further experience. Hope this provides a little perspective.

Aston Villa can confirm that the majority of forthcoming home Under-23 matches will now be played at the Bodymoor Heath Training Ground.

The brand new facility will open its doors for the first time on Friday 29th November when Portsmouth are the visitors.

The club would like to encourage supporters to come and support our Young Lions but would like to advise that a restricted number of tickets will be on sale for each match.

All matches are All Ticket and tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

Supporters without a ticket will not be granted entry.

There are also parking restrictions at the new facility and the club would like to advise supporters to car share where possible but limited parking is available on a strictly first-come, first-served basis.

Refreshments including hot food and drinks will be available from a card-only kiosk – no cash – and no alcohol, smoking or vaping is permitted.

There may be some exposure to the elements so supporters will be allowed to bring umbrellas with them.

Tickets will be on sale tomorrow from 5pm.

Thanks Legion, I’ve updated my records accordingly.
It changes things a bit in terms of the youngest debuts list.
The DoB in the match programme put Cam 37th on the list, between Alan Wakeman & Mark Burke.
However with his correct DoB identified, Cam just scrapes into the top 20 at 17 years and 261 days.
Thus pushing teammate Jacob Ramsey into 21st place by 3 days.
It seems a little bit sad that the programme editors have to gamble on googling players details instead of being unable/unwilling to acquire the correct information from within the club.

I assume you mean Jacob Ramsey, in which case I'd add his brother Aaron as well. I've not seen much of him but have been told by someone I trust that he is a bit special and that the club are very excited about him.

Turns 17 early next year I think, so that's not too far short of when you start seeing players get looked at. I suspect it's unlikely though because he's not had many U23 appearances and I suspect they'd want to give him a while at that level before throwing him into the 1st team.

I'm really concerned that there isn't a great deal of talent pushing to come through from the academy or if there is being given a real chance to get a squad place. Looking around at Man U, Chelsea, Spurs in recent years have had a few lads make an impact. We have Jack and not much else.

Went down to the Prozac, as it's only a short walk from home.

Just about deserved it. The winner was a good move finished off by Emma Follis, though she may have just been offside as the ball came in. Shame there's no VAR, eh?

Disappointed that we couldn't pass our way out of defence and so came under pressure for the last twenty minutes. Generally defended well, one cross/shot clipped the bar.

WotM by a mile was the centre-back Elisha N'Dow who was elegant in possession and defended well, too.

We lost an entertaining game 2-1. City had some swagger about them and knocked it around well and were good value for the 2- 0 half time lead.
2nd half we upped the tempo and the game became more end to end. Archer went off and the replacement caused them a lot of problems. We hit the post after a good move and then scored a fine individual goal but it came a tad too late.

For £3 It was a decent game and in a stadium that would put a few league 1 & 2 grounds to shame.

Incredible how the entire area has been developed.

Agreed. Like I said, not knowing if she’s any good or not it’s all I can add. It is surprising though. Black female hair is notoriously expensive to look after well and all the ones I know who can afford it pay a fortune to do so. It’s a bit like Dr Tony’s shoes, but I spend my life almost exclusively around black women rather than white men and they talk about hair a lot. Sorry.

In the global scheme of things it's a minor development, but with her being such a "name" figure in women's football I see this as a real statement of intent from the club, and another albeit small sign that we now have serious owners.

Good point Dave - unfortunately they don't always get game there .... there is no incentive for the club loaning the player to develop them which is a shame for the player ..so it is a "rock and a hard place scenario"
Must be unsettling for an individual .......imagine working for a company in Birmingham and then being told you are going to work for another company in Rochdale " to gain work experience"

Yes, we don't appear to be so stringent about enforcing game time.

However, it's been noticeable that our recent loanees to lower league clubs don't start very regularly. This is perhaps indicative of a worrying standard over the past couple of seasons.

Losing 4-0 to Exeter and Doncaster, irrespective of the age range, would also appear to highlight a lack of quality coming through.

Not sure about the strength of junior football in Birmingham as I havnt lived there for over 25 years - but up here on Merseyside (where I gained my FA coaching badges for Junior and Disabled football) I have seen a marked decline in the numbers and quality of youngsters coming into  the game - clubs I have been associated are running fewer teams - this is a passionate football city but there is a distinct downturn in youngsters coming to clubs - probably due to kids preferring to play games in their bedrooms rather than get muddy on a football pitch - overbearing parents and coaches don't help either
I no longer coach ( gave up when VCTM discovered birds and booze :)) but watch Saturday morning football whilst out walking the dog - the standard is really quite poor - due in the main to poorly trained club managers/ coaches c`est la vie

Front 3 of Davis, Vassilev and Wright.

Should be interesting.

My first U23 game at the impressive BMH set-up. Sell out crowd of @500 (free tix). Was very cold and noticeable initially how much bigger the Baggies side were physically (especially Brunt...). Some good football from both sides to be fair and Keenan got injured after a challenge with the aforementioned Brunt. Left hamstring...

Cameron A did well when he came on and our right back Kesler had a very strong second half. We hit the woodwork a couple of times (and had a pen saved) but our keeper had to pull off a number of good saves. Albion were 3 points ahead of us before the game and do look the stronger outfit. There set up is/was ahead of ours which is why we are obviously taking some of their staff.

Pitches, stand and clubhouse are all very impressive and can only help attract the best local lads to the club imo.

Thanks Lee, yes that looked to be the case. I've just added in that we missed a pen too which I had forgotten about! I liked the look of Mungo Bridge our CH Captain, made a couple of mistakes but looked good on the ball and recovered well if he lost the ball.

Chris Brunt in the u23's? The bloke must be close to retirement with kids old enough to work.

As per the Davis thread, did he walk off ok? and was the challenge a bit of a leveller? Pulls and tears are pretty rare from impact injuries so if Brunt has flattened him it could be as simple as bruising/dead leg rather than anything major and he's come off as a precaution.

If I remember right he got a left foot shot across the goal in that hit the post. He was stretching his hammy after that - I think Brunt caught him as he shot - may have overstretched.

For those who watch regularly, what are your thoughts on Mungo Bridge (apart from having a great name and the possibility of reusing the old U-gooooo chants!)? I was just reading that he'd been invited to join first team training on a number of occasions this year and Smith really likes him.

And Ramsey (his brother) and you can't have this discussion without mentioning Archer or Legion will hunt you down, I've heard good things about Tyreik Wright as well.

I dont understand Hepburn-Murphy playing for Derby's U23s instead of getting big boys football at Tranmere even if he didn't always start for them. He scored for Derby this morning but why not just put him back in our reserves? Unless a pre-contract to join Derby in the summer has been agreed but it's an odd one.

Ladies were as comfortable as it’s possible to be, played well within themselves and still won at a canter. Could have had double figures if they played with a little more intensity.

Number 21, who’s name I don’t know, was immense, like a fit, energetic, sober, Danny Drinkwater. Ran the game.

Well done girls

I hope so, regardless of which division we're in.

Ah, Cheltenham Town ... not the greatest place to develop into a Championship player, then. Or, he's in a team that's doing well in its division, and that has to be good experience.
Or, perhaps he'll return and cement himself into the HMF role we desperately need.

I've heard very good things, all the info i get about the kids is from someone who's with the community sport programme and he reckons we have 4-5 around that age that could be top level players, Aaron Ramsey and Philogene-Bidace (JPB) are the other names I remember and there was a young fullback that he was raving about but I can't remember the name. He was raving about JPB when I spoke to him about a month ago, reckons he needs to work on his finishing but that he's got the pace, strength and skill to be in the first team already.

Back on topic Chukwuemeka is very good for his age, big, quick, strong, decent shot and a good passer, not heard of anything that's 'wrong' with his game so it's no great surprise that the rich clubs are looking but he's the sort of player that we need to convince will be better staying and getting game time with us, if we want to develop as Purslow has suggested we can't be losing our best academy players before they even break through.

It's good that there's a group of them. You can add Louis Barry to those names and hopefully Legion's pupil too. If they're part of a group and you can show them a clear pathway into the first team, you're more likely to keep promising young talent.

For those that watch the younger levels, what's happened to Mungo Bridge? He was being linked with Milan and Real Madrid but doesn't seem to be getting talked about in terms of progressing to the first team.

1 of the group was Archer, not sure how that slipped my mind. He's never mentioned Barry, I assume because of how he came in to the club. Most of the players my mate talks about have been with the club for a few years.

He was a massive fan of Bridge as well but I've not not seen him mentioned for a while. The fullback I'd mentioned is Bradley Burton by the way. I normally hold off on talking about the players he mentions  too much until they start playing U23 and I can see them myself because I'm not a fan of using 2nd hand opinions on players. The difference right now is that there's nothing else to talk about in regards to football.

Looks incredibly likely. They just announced the FA Women's Championship season is over, "with sporting outcomes to be decided at a later date."

The message this sends is appalling. OK to cancel the women's league but not the men's. Greg Clarke, Garry Hoffman, Rick Parry - just come on out and admit it's all about the money.

Hope the reverse does not happen.

Will be playing their home games at Walsall's Banks's stadium next season.

Boo. Was planning to go to see them and add a ground. Have been to Walsall a few times already. Be nice if they played on Saturdays occasionally, especially when the men aren't playing due to international break. Sunday games are shite cos you can't get too drunk afterwards. Although if I'm still "working" from home it might be okay...

I told you that a few months ago, I'm claiming that as an accurate ITK.

Is it a first?

Surprised at that. Maybe she had another club or couldn't commit to full-time. Thanks for everything anyway Melissa.

Barry is the stand out name on there but I think I've mentioned before I've heard very good things about Burton as well, I think he's one to look out for. Kesler is supposed to be very good as well.

Are Myles and Harrison Sohna twins? Just noticing they have the same surname and age. Have we ever had twins play for us?
