Title: Villa penalty shoot outs
Post by: somec on May 15, 2019, 01:28:33 PM
Last night got me thinking.

How many penalty shoot outs have we participated in?

What's out overall record?

The ones I remember are,

v Tranmere 1994
v Inter 1994
v Bolton 2000
v WBA last night

We won all of them.

The only one I remember us losing was against Wimbledon in the FA Cup (1993?) with Richardson missing one.

What were the other ones?

The penalties at Wimbledon were taken in front of us away fans. I think Vinnie Jones scored the winning penalty for them and gave it the big 'un.  Richardson definitely missed one that night. Did Teale miss one for us as well  that night?

We lost one against West Ham, which I only remember because Southgate missed his penalty. But it didn't matter as the tie was replayed because West Ham had fielded an ineligible player.

Edit: League cup Quarter final 1999/2000 season.

There was also that League Cup match that we lost at West Ham, but then won when it had to be replayed because they had fielded an ineligible player. They won the first match on penalties, didn't they?

The first I saw, and possibly our first, was in an early round of the League Cup against Colchester United when the tie was over two legs.  We won the first leg away 2-0 but then lost the home leg by the same score.  We won the shoot out.  I don't remember the year, must have been late 70s or early 80s.

EDIT: This was in the 1979/80 season, and we won the penalty shoot out 9-8.

I was standing near the top of the Holmsdale Road end where the away fans use to stand when Richardson missed his pen against Wimbledon .It was such a bad pen the ball nearly hit me

I think Mike Walker (father of Spurs and England keeper Ian Walker) and former Norwich and Everton boss was in goal for Colchester that night.

Thanks for the replies!

I'd forgotten about a few mentioned here.

The only penalty shoot outs I was actually there for were Inter and Bolton.

I have much better memories of the Inter game.

The Bolton game was arguably a bigger game but the final that followed it has soured any positive memories from that cup run.

I was at the Tranmere one, I left the Holte End before they were taken and sat on a wooden fence in the car park behind with another guy.

We saw people gushing out when it looked like we'd lose then running in again.

Once vctory was confirmed we jumped in the air high fiving.

I never got his name ......

I was in the Holte for that Colchester penalty shout out in 1979. I reckon Mike Walkers penalty went further than Chris Waddle’s in Italia 90. It was like a goal kick and must have gone 2|3 of the way up the Holte

All scored, you must be thinking of a Man Utd shootout.
